Job Description
This Phlebotomist II role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection while supporting daily laboratory operations across multiple clinic locations. The position involves drawing and processing specimens, troubleshooting issues, training as needed, and recommending workflow improvements to ensure safe, efficient, and patient-centered service for primarily adult and geriatric patients, with some pediatric collections.
Responsibilities
Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring safe and accurate venipuncture for patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric.
Collect blood and other specimens, including urine and fecal samples when required, following established procedures and protocols.
Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously so patients understand the process and feel at ease.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.
Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
Package specimens for transport according to protocol and regulatory requirements.
Store specimen samples at the appropriate temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes.
Accurately label specimens and follow all procedures specific to each protocol to preserve specimen quality during handling and transport.
Update patient information and documentation accurately in the system or on forms as required.
Record equipment maintenance data and perform basic decontamination tasks according to established procedures.
Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct tests and collections are performed.
Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to address inquiries as appropriate.
Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards.
Attend annual departmental trainings and stay current with procedural and regulatory updates.
Handle a workload of approximately 30-40 blood draws per shift while maintaining accuracy and patient care standards.
Work primarily with adult and geriatric populations, with the ability to perform pediatric collections, including heel sticks on infants.
Travel to and work in a variety of clinic settings as part of a float role, adapting quickly to different locations and workflows.
Assist with troubleshooting issues in specimen collection and processing and make recommendations to improve workflow and efficiency.
Provide excellent customer service, demonstrating empathy, professionalism, and strong communication with patients and clinical staff.
Essential Skills
Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a phlebotomist.
Pediatric through geriatric blood draw experience, including at least 1-2 years of experience with heel sticks on babies.
Proficiency with straight needle blood draws.
Demonstrated ability to perform venipuncture and blood collection safely and accurately.
Experience performing 30-40 blood draws per shift while maintaining quality and accuracy.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in varied clinical environments.
Strong multitasking and critical thinking skills to manage multiple patients, tasks, and priorities.
Excellent customer service and communication skills when interacting with patients and clinical staff.
High school diploma or GED.
Valid driver's license.
Reliable means of transportation to travel between multiple clinic locations.
Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and adherence to safety and compliance standards.
Comfort working primarily with adult and geriatric patients, with capability to perform pediatric collections.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience processing specimens after drawing, including centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and preparing for transport.
Prior experience in mobile or float phlebotomy roles across multiple sites.
Familiarity with laboratory workflows and specimen handling protocols.
Ability to read and interpret physicians' orders and laboratory requisitions accurately.
Strong attention to detail in labeling, documentation, and verification of test orders.
Willingness to attend ongoing training and adapt to updated procedures and regulations.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00/hr.
