Position Summary
The Gas Accounting Team is responsible for ensuring the integrity of the of gas costing information and the Company's compliance with state and federal regulations. In particular, the Accounting Analyst compiles and analyzes gas costing information used in financial reporting (SEC, IRS, NCUC, SCPSC, etc.), and fulfillment of regulatory requests. This position is responsible for recording all cost of gas entries, including all related regulatory deferred accounts and inventory accounts. The Gas Accounting Analyst works closely with other team members and departments to meet these obligations.The Gas Accounting Analyst is responsible for the receipt, analysis and reporting of gas cost accounting information from and to both internal and external sources. The accuracy and timeliness of the gas cost information analyzed by the Gas Accounting Analyst is critical and sensitive in nature. Strong interviewing and teamwork skills are required to perform information gathering, analysis, and reporting. Activities include the preparation and checking of journal entries affecting revenues, cost of gas, regulatory assets and liabilities, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and regulatory directives.This position requires a basic knowledge of accounting theory, terminology, and principles. The incumbent must have excellent organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and oral and written communication skills. The position requires the ability to interface and communicate with all levels within the Company, as well as, with outside parties such as auditors, governmental authorities, and utility commission public staff members.
Responsibilities
Understand key gas cost accounting concepts
Collaboratively work with the appropriate parties to incorporate operational and accounting updates as they arise
Prepare month-end deliverables developed by the team for accuracy (such as analysis, journal entries, account reconciliations)
Prepare regulatory filings and audits for cost of gas matters
Support execution and oversight of control compliance
Participate in efficiency and process improvement efforts
Research and prepare documentation related to gas accounting decisions and theory
Ensure strict adherence to closing deadlines
Perform other duties as assigned

Required/Basic Qualifications (Accounting Analyst)
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or other closely related discipline
Must have 1 year (2+ desired) of increasingly diverse or complex experience in related field in addition to degree
Required/Basic Qualifications (Accounting Analyst II)
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or other closely related discipline
Must have 2 years (4+ desired) of increasingly diverse or complex experience in a related field in addition to degree
Possesses and applies comprehensive and strategic knowledge of accounting and finance principles, practices, and procedures to complete complex assignments
Experience with financial applications (i.e., PeopleSoft FMIS, Power Plant, etc.) and query tools
Proficient using Microsoft products such as Excel, Word, and Power Point
Desired Qualifications
Master's degree in Business Administration or Master's degree in Accounting
In addition to desired degree, 2 years related work experience
CPA
Additional Preferred Qualifications
Proficient using Microsoft products such as Excel, Word, Teams, and Power Point
Possesses and applies fundamental accounting and finance concepts, practices, and procedures
Experience with financial applications and query tools
Natural gas industry experience
Effective interpersonal skills, team oriented
Detail oriented, outstanding organizational skills
History of high-quality work in an accounting environment dealing with rigorous reporting and closing deadlines
Demonstrated ability to drive process efficiency improvements

Office Environment
Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
Specific Requirements
Years of prior equivalent work-related experience in lieu of a degree is N/A unless grandfathered in and requires CFO Staff approval.
