Job Overview
Charles River Laboratories (CRL) is seeking a Medical Technologist I to join our integrated toxicology (ITox) team at the Kansas City site. This site is the first of its kind, bridging CRL's Discovery and Safety Assessment business units, while bringing automation to standard lead optimization toxicology study models to deliver rapid study results to our clients. A Medical Technologist I, within the Clinical Pathology discipline, is responsible for developing proficiency in the execution of assigned core functions according to protocol and/or SOPs. The Clinical Pathology discipline is responsible for scheduling, setup, processing, data production, QC, and analysis of biological specimens with an emphasis on producing a high-quality outcome. In addition to the basic core functions, technicians may be required to lead process improvement initiatives, complete cross-functional training, and support on-going global initiatives.
The pay rate for this position is $25.50 USD/hour.
Job Description
Perform, document, review, verify all procedures, materials, and results in compliance with regulatory standards as applicable (protocols, methods, SOPs, etc.).
Embody the behaviors and peformance characteristics as described in the CRL DNA.
Develop proficiency in laboratory skills which may include, but are not limited to labeling, sample processing, sample QC, and setups functions.
Developing proficiency and basic troubleshooting abilities in the use, calibration, and maintenance of assigned instrumentation.
Perform laboratory maintenance functions (e.g. cleaning centrifuges, counters, etc.) with minimal oversight.
Develop familiarity with business continuity procedures when systems go down or are temporarily unavailable.
Demonstrates effective communication skills through both informal and formal discussions with peers, supervisor, and team.
Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: HS (high school) diploma/GED (general educational development) AND an Associate of Science degree required . Bachelor's degree in biological science, preferred .
Experience: No previous work experience required if accompanied by certification (MLT, MT, or MLS). 1 (one) year of relevant experience as a Medical Technologist or at a CRO accepted if no certification with HS/GED and AS degree.
Certification: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or Medical Technologist (MT), or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), preferred .
Other:
Competency required for departmental technical skills.
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing at all levels inside and outside the organization.
Basic familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
Computer skills, commensurate with Essential Functions, including the ability to learn validated system.
Ability to ensure the integrity of the studies and fulfill the regulatory agencies requirements by performing activities according to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Standar Operating Procedures (SOP), Business Operating Procedures (BOP) and the Institutional Animal Care and use Committee (IACUC) rules.
Ability to work extended hours beyond normal work schedule to include, but not limited to evenings, weekends, extended shift, and/or extra shifts, sometimes on short notice.
Ability to work under specific time constraints.
Workplace Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to perform general office and/or laboratory procedures, which require, talking, hearing, standing, or sitting for long periods of time, typing/entering data into a computer, using appropriate instruments, reaching with hands and arms, and wearing safety equipment (PPE) according to OSHA regulations and company standards.
While performing the duties of this job, the emloyee will be required to wear protective clothing which may include goggles, face shield, surgical mask, cap, gloves and scrubs, work with toxic or caustic chemicals, work with biohazards, and/or work near live animals with risk of exposure to allergens and/or zoonotic diseases.
The employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, unpleasant odors, and/or wet, humid and/or extreme temperature conditions.
Specific vision abilites required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
