Overview
As a Staff Software Engineer (Dev Lead) within Customer & Marketing Platforms, you will provide technical leadership for a team responsible for building and operating the foundational customer capabilities that power REI's digital experiences. These capabilities include customer accounts, identity and consent management, customer data platforms, offer management, promotional services, customer profile services, and integrations supporting personalization and marketing initiatives
You will serve as the technical domain expert for your team, partnering closely with Product Managers, Solution Architects, Engineering Managers, and engineers to deliver scalable, secure, and resilient solutions. You will translate architecture into executable plans, lead engineering execution, drive code quality and operational excellence, and ensure the team consistently delivers customer value.
You will own the technical health of the platform, guide engineering decisions, mentor engineers, and help shape the future of REI's customer and marketing technology ecosystem.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
In This Job You Will
Partner with Product, Architecture, Marketing, Customer, and Technology stakeholders to understand business priorities and translate them into scalable technical solutions.
Serve as the technical leader and subject matter expert for one or more Customer & Marketing Platform domains, including Customer Accounts, Identity & Consent, Customer Data Management, Customer Profile, Offer Management, and Marketing integrations.
Lead engineering teams through design, development, testing, deployment, and support of highly available customer-facing services and APIs.
Translate solution architecture into executable engineering plans, technical stories, estimates, risks, and implementation strategies.
Drive code quality through design reviews, code reviews, engineering standards, and best practices.
Lead technical planning activities, backlog refinement, sprint planning, and delivery readiness activities for the team.
Identify delivery risks, technical dependencies, and scalability concerns early and develop mitigation strategies.
Collaborate with Solution Architects to ensure engineering implementation aligns with enterprise architecture standards while remaining practical and deliverable.
Drive operational excellence by establishing monitoring, alerting, observability, and reliability practices across customer platforms.
Participate in and lead troubleshooting, incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement activities for production systems.
Mentor engineers through pairing, technical coaching, architecture discussions, and code review.
Champion engineering excellence, platform modernization, automation, security, and cloud-native best practices.
Drive adoption of emerging technologies including AI-assisted development, customer identity technologies, customer data platforms, and modern integration patterns where they create measurable business value.
Contribute to strategic initiatives supporting Customer 360, Customer Data Management (CDM), Personalization, Auth0, Consent Management, and Promotional Platforms.
Required Skills and Experience
6+ years of progressively complex software engineering experience using technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, APIs, microservices, and cloud-native platforms.
Technical Leadership: Experience leading technical delivery, driving engineering standards, conducting design and code reviews, and mentoring engineers.
Source Control & CI/CD: Experience with Git-based source control systems (GitLab, GitHub, Bitbucket) and modern CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitLab, Jenkins, or similar technologies.
Cloud & DevOps: Experience building and supporting applications on AWS, including containerization, deployment automation, monitoring, and operational support.
Observability & Troubleshooting: Experience with monitoring and logging tools such as Datadog, Splunk, New Relic, or similar platforms, including production support, incident response, and root cause analysis.
Architecture & Engineering Practices: Strong understanding of distributed systems, integration patterns, API design, scalability, resiliency, performance optimization, security, and modern architecture patterns.
Testing & Quality: Experience driving testing standards, automated testing, and continuous improvement of engineering quality practices.
Collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively with Product, Architecture, Engineering, Security, and Business stakeholders using tools such as Jira, Confluence, Teams, Slack, and Mural.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Demonstrated ability to explore emerging technologies, drive adoption of engineering best practices, and foster a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
Business & Technical Acumen: Understands the business capabilities supported by the platform and applies sound engineering judgment to deliver scalable, maintainable, and secure solutions.

Pay Range
$130,200.00 - $208,200.00 per year
