Summary
The Maintenance Engineer - HVAC Test Laboratory (Electrical & Mechanical Facilities) is a full-time, onsite position located at Carrier-Charlotte (9701 Old Statesville Road, Charlotte, NC 28269), operating on a Monday through Friday schedule from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM with emergency on-call availability as needed.
This role is responsible for performing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on HVAC test rigs, dynamic lab infrastructure, and low-to-medium voltage electrical distribution systems to ensure maximum testing uptime. The engineer will collaborate closely with test supervisors to support setup readiness, troubleshoot instrumentation and data acquisition systems, and lead electrical fault diagnoses. Additionally, the position drives continuous improvement through root cause analysis, manages equipment safety compliance, and coordinates with external vendors for critical calibration and repairs.
Lab Equipment & Facility Maintenance
Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance of HVAC test rigs and lab infrastructure
Maintain chillers, AHUs, cooling towers, pumps, compressors, and piping systems
Ensure high uptime of lab utilities (chilled water, hot water, compressed air)
Quickly respond to breakdowns and restore operations with minimal impact to testing schedules
Electrical & Mechanical Systems
Troubleshoot electrical panels, PLC systems, VFDs, instrumentation, and power distribution systems
Support safe operation of medium and low voltage electrical systems.
Perform electrical fault diagnosis and corrective actions
Ensure compliance with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures
Maintain refrigeration circuits, valves, heat exchangers, and hydronic systems
Support installation, commissioning, and modification of test setups
Read and interpret P&IDs, mechanical drawings, and system schematics
Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, protective relays, and associated distribution equipment.
Calibration & Instrumentation Support
Support calibration of sensors (RTDs, pressure, flow, and electrical instruments)
Work with vendors and internal teams to ensure measurement accuracy
Ensure all instrumentation is operational and compliant with test standards
Lab Operations Support
Collaborate with test engineers and supervisors to ensure readiness of test setups
Support test execution by ensuring stable operating conditions
Assist in setting up and troubleshooting of data acquisition systems (e.g., Yokogawa, LabView)
Safety & Compliance
Lead and support hazard analysis and safe work practices
Ensure compliance with OSHA, AHRI, and internal safety standards
Maintain documentation related to maintenance and safety procedures
Write standard work instructions for equipment in the lab.
KPIs, Reporting & Continuous Improvement
Track equipment uptime, breakdown frequency, and maintenance metrics
Perform root cause analysis (RCA) and implement corrective actions
Drive improvements in reliability, efficiency, and preventive maintenance programs
Collaboration & Vendor Management
Coordinate with external vendors for repairs, calibration, and upgrades
Work closely with lab supervisors and engineering teams to meet testing schedules
Support procurement and inventory of critical spare parts
Work Environment
Exposure to refrigerants, compressed gases, and varying temperatures
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in mechanical / electrical engineering or a technical field.
3+ years of experience in HVAC systems, or industrial maintenance, or lab environment.
3+ years of hands-on experience with electrical and mechanical systems.
Able and willing to work off-shift or weekend support during critical maintenance or breakdowns for emergency on-call.
Able and willing to stand for most of the shift, lift up to 60 pounds, and work around mechanical equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
EPA 608 Certification (Universal).
CMMS experience/knowledge.
Experience in HVAC test labs or chiller testing environments.
Knowledge of AHRI standards and lab testing practices.
Experience with PLCs, SCADA, LabView, or Yokogawa systems.
Strong understanding of hydronic systems, cooling towers, and industrial utilities.
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and P&IDs.
Ability to prioritize tasks and support critical lab operations.
Strong understanding of maintenance planning, troubleshooting, and execution.
Knowledge of safety practices and standard operating procedures.
Pay Range
The annual salary for this position is between $64,500.00 - $129,500.00 annually. Factors which may affect pay within this range include, but are not limited to, skills, education, experience, and other unique qualifications of the successful candidate.
Other Compensation
This?position may be entitled to short-term cash incentives, subject to plan requirements.?
