Job Title: Construction Laborer
Job Description
This role focuses on supporting a concrete block production facility by operating automated machinery, handling construction materials, and assisting with the manufacturing of brick pavers, concrete blocks, cinder blocks, and other hardscaping products. You will receive extensive on-the-job training to inspect finished products, perform basic preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on equipment, and safely move materials throughout the shop and yard. The position runs primarily on first shift and requires comfort working in a fast-paced, physically demanding industrial environment.
Responsibilities
Operate automated machinery that pours and forms materials into brick pavers, concrete blocks, cinder blocks, and other construction and hardscaping products.
Learn and apply proper inspection techniques to ensure blocks and other products meet quality standards.
Perform basic preventive maintenance (PMs) on production equipment as directed, including cleaning, lubrication, and routine checks.
Assist with troubleshooting equipment issues under guidance, helping to identify and resolve minor mechanical problems.
Shovel and handle materials such as dirt, concrete, rocks, and other aggregates as part of the production process.
Safely move finished products and materials around the facility, including using forklifts and other material-handling equipment when trained and authorized.
Support work in both the indoor shop and outdoor yard as needed, adapting to changing tasks and priorities.
Work comfortably at heights when required for equipment access or material handling tasks.
Follow all safety procedures and use appropriate protective equipment to maintain a safe working environment.
Collaborate with a small, lean team of coworkers on the shift, communicating clearly and supporting others to keep production running efficiently.
Maintain a clean and organized work area, including regular removal of debris and materials to keep pathways clear.
Consistently report to work on time and complete scheduled shifts, including extended hours during peak construction seasons.
Essential Skills
At least 6 months of construction labor experience in areas such as masonry, concrete, asphalt, hardscaping, landscaping, or demolition.
Demonstrated willingness to learn new skills, processes, and equipment operation over an extended training period.
Ability to lift and carry 80-100 pounds on a regular basis in a physically demanding environment.
Reliable attendance and the ability to work first shift hours (typically 6:00 AM - 4:00 PM) across 4-6 days per week.
Comfort working at heights when required for production or maintenance tasks.
Basic familiarity with construction environments and materials such as concrete, blocks, and aggregates.
Ability to work effectively as part of a small production team, following instructions and adapting to changing priorities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Approximately 2 years of forklift (hilo) experience is preferred for moving products and materials safely around the facility.
Mechanical aptitude, including an interest in how machines work and a comfort with making minor repairs and assisting with troubleshooting.
Experience with carpentry or concrete work is beneficial for understanding product handling and construction materials.
Prior experience in shop, factory, or industrial environments is an advantage.
Comfort working long hours during peak construction seasons, which may involve up to 60 hours per week for periods of 1-5 months.
Why Work Here?
You will join a long-standing, family-owned organization that values its employees and invests heavily in training and skill development. The company welcomes entry-level candidates and provides up to a year of comprehensive training to help you grow into more advanced responsibilities. As part of a union shop, you benefit from strong wages, health coverage, pension, holiday pay, and vacation time. The culture emphasizes stability, learning, and long-term career growth, offering a clear path to increase your earning potential over time.
Work Environment
You will work primarily indoors in a loud shop and factory environment, with some tasks performed in an outdoor yard. The facility focuses on concrete block and hardscaping materials, so you should expect to get dirty while handling concrete, aggregates, and related products. The team operates lean, with about five people per shift, and runs first shift from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Workweeks can range from 4 to 6 days, and during peak construction seasons you may work up to 60 hours per week for several months. You will use automated production machinery and material-handling equipment such as forklifts once trained, and you must be comfortable working at heights and in a physically demanding industrial setting.
