Summary The incumbent is a Health Science Specialist, Clinical Research coordinator, for one or more research studies conducted at the VA Medical Center. The mission of research and development (R&D) is to improve the quality of health care for veterans. Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Duties include the following: Serves as project coordinator in support of one or research studies. Working closely with the principal investigator(s), the incumbent will manage routine day-to-day research activities. Will create and oversee project management tracking systems to assure the study remains on schedule and in compliance in regards to data collection goals, budget expenditures, and research regulation compliance. Collect study data (e.g., conduct structured interviews to rate symptoms, complete observational ratings in clinical settings). The position will involve creating and maintaining complex research databases, working with existing VA administrative databases, and managing spreadsheet files for data tracking, budget tracking, and other project management tracking tasks. Assist the project investigators in grant construction for future research or clinical proposals. With final review and approval by the investigator, the incumbent will prepare reports and submissions for the local IRB and R&D committees, applications to sponsors, and VA progress/final reports, as required by VA regulations. Represents the project on study-specific conference calls as needed. Other responsibilities include supporting other research team members; generating periodic progress reports; conducting literature searches required for the assigned project; and contributing ideas and suggestions throughout all phases of the research or clinical demonstration projects. Qualifications BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree with the major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this Research Health Science Specialist position. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED AND MUST SHOW DATE DEGREE CONFERRED) In addition to the basic education requirement, you must meet the following grade requirements: For GS-9 -SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal service. Qualifying specialized experience include: Oversee and review the work of project personnel and staff, including study task assignments involving data collection, database development, data entry, and data-editing specification system design and development. Coordinate research projects. Serve as a representative and liaison with investigators, funding agency personnel, and clinical site staff. Enroll and interview patients for research trials and conduct informed-consent procedures. Work directly with research scientists and staff in the design and development of research projects, including interventions, as well as in managing regulatory and compliance requirements OR Education (GS-09): Applicants may substitute education for the required. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. This education must provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. NOTE: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
