Job Title: Mechanical Engineer (Professional Engineer - Healthcare HVAC)Job Description
This role is ideal for a seasoned Mechanical Engineer and licensed Professional Engineer who specializes in HVAC system design for healthcare and laboratory environments. You will lead complex engineering projects for hospitals, clinical laboratories, and outpatient facilities, ensuring that HVAC and plumbing systems meet rigorous safety, infection control, and regulatory standards. Working in a collaborative, design-driven environment, you will take projects from concept through construction documents with minimal guidance, provide high levels of client service, and help grow and lead a mechanical engineering team.
Responsibilities
Lead the mechanical engineering design for hospitals, clinical labs, and outpatient healthcare facilities, with a focus on high-performance HVAC and plumbing systems.
Design complete HVAC and plumbing systems from start to finish with minimal guidance, ensuring a high standard of quality and compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
Develop designs for industry-standard HVAC systems, including VAV systems, VRF systems, heat pumps, and packaged rooftop units, tailored to healthcare and laboratory environments.
Perform hydronic piping design, including pump selection, pipe sizing, and layout for efficient and reliable system operation.
Conduct duct sizing and fan selection to meet airflow, pressure, and acoustic requirements for healthcare and laboratory facilities.
Use heating and cooling load calculation software to accurately size equipment and systems based on building usage and environmental conditions.
Create plumbing system designs, including coordination with other disciplines and integration with medical gas systems when applicable.
Apply mechanical and plumbing building codes to all designs, ensuring safety, regulatory compliance, and alignment with industry best practices.
Write clear and comprehensive specifications for mechanical systems on a variety of project @types and scales.
Collaborate closely with peers, drafters, and multidisciplinary project teams to produce high-quality construction documents for large and complex projects.
Provide a high level of client service, including responsive communication, thoughtful technical solutions, and proactive project leadership.
Evaluate and select HVAC and plumbing systems based on an understanding of their advantages, disadvantages, costs, and efficiencies, particularly within healthcare settings.
Use Autodesk MEP tools, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Outlook, and Microsoft Office to develop designs, documentation, and project communications.
Mentor and support team members, contributing to the growth and leadership of the mechanical engineering group.
Participate in the development of innovative, responsible design solutions that enhance user experience and benefit the broader community.
Essential Skills
Minimum of 10 years of HVAC or plumbing design experience, including at least 3-5 years specifically focused on large-scale healthcare or laboratory projects.
Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program.
Licensed Professional Engineer, or ability to obtain licensure by comity in the state of the hiring office.
Deep experience in HVAC design and engineering for healthcare environments, including hospitals, clinical labs, and outpatient facilities.
Proficiency in the design of industry-standard HVAC systems such as VAV systems, VRF systems, heat pumps, and packaged rooftop units.
Ability to independently design HVAC and plumbing systems from concept through completion with a high standard of quality and minimal guidance.
Experience with hydronic piping design, pump selection, duct sizing, and fan selection.
Experience using heating and cooling load calculation software to support accurate system sizing.
Hands-on experience with plumbing system design for commercial and healthcare projects.
Strong knowledge and application of mechanical and plumbing building codes.
Experience writing detailed specifications for mechanical projects.
Ability to collaborate effectively with peers, drafters, and multidisciplinary project teams to produce high-quality construction documents.
Demonstrated ability to provide a high level of client service in a consulting or project-based environment.
Comprehensive understanding of HVAC and plumbing systems, including their advantages, disadvantages, costs, and efficiencies.
Proficiency with Autodesk MEP tools, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Outlook, and Microsoft Office.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
ASHRAE Healthcare Facility Design Professional (HFDP) certification.
LEED AP or Certified Energy Manager (CEM) credential.
Experience with medical gas system design and plumbing coordination in healthcare facilities.
Interest in and aptitude for growing and leading a mechanical engineering team.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, design-focused culture.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $45.67 - $52.88/hr.
