The District Sales Manager develops and manages new and existing customer relationships within a multi-state Midwest territory, focusing on machinery solutions for industrial and manufacturing customers. This role combines consultative technical sales, territory planning, and relationship management, with extensive travel to customer sites. The District Sales Manager partners closely with internal technical teams to deliver tailored solutions, training, and support while executing territory and account sales plans and contributing to overall sales and marketing strategy.
Responsibilities
Develop and manage strong relationships with new and existing customers across the Midwest territory, including states such as IL, IN, IA, KY, MI, OH, and TN.
Execute territory and account sales plans, including accurate sales forecasting and regular reporting on performance and pipeline.
Travel extensively throughout the assigned territory, typically 4 or more days per week, to conduct in-person sales calls and strengthen customer relationships.
Present, demonstrate, and recommend machinery solutions that are tailored to each customer's operational needs and business goals.
Partner with Applications and Engineering teams to deliver technical solutions, product training, and ongoing support to customers.
Represent the company at sales seminars, trade shows, and industry events to promote products, build brand awareness, and generate new opportunities.
Monitor market trends, competitor activities, and product developments to help shape sales and marketing strategies within the territory.
Manage relationships with manufacturer representatives within the territory to ensure alignment on sales goals and customer service standards.
Maintain accurate sales forecasts, expense reports, and all required administrative documentation in a timely and organized manner.
Use CRM and ERP systems, including Salesforce, to manage accounts, track activities, and document customer interactions and opportunities.
Negotiate pricing, contract terms, and value-based proposals that meet customer needs while supporting business objectives.
Read and interpret manufacturing quotes, technical documentation, and related materials to support accurate proposals and solution recommendations.
Collaborate with internal teams to ensure a smooth handoff from sales to implementation and ongoing customer support.
Work independently in a fast-paced environment, taking initiative to identify new opportunities and grow the territory's book of business.
Essential Skills
3-5 years of sales experience in a related industry, ideally involving machinery, parts, or manufacturing processes, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Proven experience in territory sales and account management with a focus on building and maintaining long-term customer relationships.
Strong mechanical aptitude, with the ability to understand machinery and industrial applications.
Ability and willingness to travel extensively, approximately 80% or more within the assigned territory, with occasional international travel.
Proven negotiation skills, including experience with pricing, contract terms, and value-based selling.
Ability to read and interpret manufacturing quotes, technical documentation, and related technical materials.
Strong written communication skills, including the ability to prepare routine reports and professional correspondence.
Excellent verbal communication skills for customer presentations, product demonstrations, and internal collaboration.
Strong math skills to support pricing, quoting, and sales analysis.
Proficiency with computer systems; experience with CMS/ERP systems is preferred.
Salesforce experience is strongly preferred for managing customer relationships and sales activities.
Self-motivated and results-driven, with the ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Authorization to work in the United States (U.S. Person requirement).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Associate's degree in a technical, industrial, or engineering discipline is preferred, or equivalent relevant experience.
Experience in sales roles that involve machinery, parts, or manufacturing processes.
Experience working with manufacturer representatives or channel partners.
Background in sales support or technical sales environments.
Comfort presenting at trade shows, seminars, and industry events.
Ability to quickly learn and articulate technical product features and benefits.
Residence in the Midwest, preferably near Chicago, IL, to facilitate efficient travel within the territory.
Desire for a long-term career opportunity with a stable sales team and strong tenure.
Comfort working with a pre-established book of business while also developing new customer relationships as needed.
Work Environment
This position is field-based and heavily travel-oriented, with approximately 80% or more of the time spent on the road within the Midwest territory and occasional international travel. The role involves frequent visits to customer facilities, manufacturing plants, and industrial environments, as well as attendance at trade shows, sales seminars, and industry events. The company provides a monthly car allowance, mileage reimbursement, a company cell phone, and a computer to support travel and remote work. The position is eligible for commission, with about six months of guaranteed commission while ramping up, and eligibility for a year-end bonus. The sales team has strong tenure and focuses primarily on servicing an established book of business, with limited cold calling and business development. The work is largely autonomous, requiring independent time management, regular use of CRM and ERP systems such as Salesforce, and consistent communication with internal technical teams. Dress expectations may vary based on customer site requirements and professional standards for sales meetings, plant visits, and industry events.
