This position can be hired as either an Engineer III or Senior Engineer depending on experience
Job Summary
This job posting is for two Mechanical Engineers within the plant Maintenance Support Engineering (MSE) and Operations Support Engineering (OSE) teams. These engineers will play a vital role in ensuring quality equipment reliability and the success of component maintenance and planning activities. A key attribute of the role is to ensure component reliability is consistent with station goals.
This job posting is at the Engineer III or Senior Engineer level of the Engineering classification hierarchy.
Nuclear Engineer III is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of mechanical systems and components with general supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is complex and varied.
Senior Nuclear Engineer is the career/senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of mechanical systems and components with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions, and take actions to resolve. Senior Engineer represents a level at which career may stabilize for many years.
Responsibilities
Provides engineering/technical guidance to Operations, Maintenance, and other groups in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity both inside and outside the scope of assigned responsibility.
Supports periodic testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of assigned mechanical systems; evaluates and solves equipment failures, degradation, and operational issues; initiates and advocates for system reliability improvements.
Performs component maintenance optimization for the key components outlined in the assigned area of responsibility and coordinates component reliability improvements.
Provides tactical support for the day-to-day maintenance of the plant and is the designated owner for critical components in assigned systems.
Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, and documentation with the ability to conduct analysis for defined problems of increasing scope and complexity.
Completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage projects and interfaces.
Conducts engineering and equipment related investigations with full technical responsibility for planning and coordinating problem resolution.
Provides equipment/system technical support for Operability Determinations and supports review of Operations and Maintenance procedures.
Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures.
Demonstrates ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes and develops standards relevant to area of assignment. Keeps abreast of new developments, technologies procedures and equipment.
Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.
Ensures that mechanical system health issues are communicated to key stakeholders and management.
Maintains accurate records and files.
Coaches and mentors less experienced engineers as needed.
Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
Basic / Required Qualifications
Nuc Engineer III
Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
4-6 years of engineering experience.
Sr Nuc Engineer
Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience, OR 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
Desired Qualifications
Bachelor's/Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Registration as a Professional Engineer.
Experience in the utility industry.
Skilled in mechanical engineering theories and principles.
Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations .
Experience in the mechanical engineering areas, such as pumps, valves, chillers, compressors, heat exchangers, diesels, strainers.
Ability to interact with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Proficient in principles of project management.
Specific Requirements
Ability to achieve Unescorted Access/Security clearance
This position will have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
Typical Office environment with flexibility to support plant operations. Must be able to work in an industrial environment safely.
Hybrid Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period (2 days remote and 2 days on site during a 4 - 10 hr day work week). However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to HNP as required for ERO responsibilities.
