This role is a traditional phlebotomy position with a strong focus on blood collection, specimen processing, and exceptional customer service in a busy patient service center. The phlebotomist performs a high volume of blood draws, processes and centrifuges specimens, enters orders and patient data into the laboratory system, and supports a fast-paced clinical environment while working closely with another phlebotomist.
Responsibilities
Perform venipuncture and blood draws on patients of all ages, including pediatric and geriatric populations, with a primary focus on blood collection for approximately 70% of the workday.
Process specimens by centrifuging, splitting, labeling, and preparing samples for shipping in accordance with laboratory protocols and safety standards.
Enter and manage patient orders and test requests in the LabCorp Touch system, ensuring accurate and timely data entry and medical record documentation.
Verify and confirm patient identification and information prior to specimen collection and order entry to maintain accuracy and compliance.
Provide high-quality customer service by interacting professionally and compassionately with patients, answering questions, and helping create a positive patient experience.
Call physician offices as needed to clarify orders, obtain additional information, and communicate any issues related to specimen collection or processing.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area by cleaning equipment and work surfaces, following infection control procedures, and adhering to laboratory safety guidelines.
Restock supplies and ensure that collection rooms and processing areas remain fully equipped for daily operations.
Support a very busy patient service center by managing a high daily volume of draws, averaging around 120 blood collections per day.
Collaborate with another phlebotomist and other clinical staff to ensure smooth workflow, effective communication, and consistent patient care.
Float between multiple designated locations as needed, primarily among Laguna Hills, Mission locations, and San Clemente, while adapting to different site workflows.
Participate in a structured two-week training program, including a full-time 40-hour second week focused on entering and processing procedures.
Follow all laboratory and medical environment protocols, including specimen handling, documentation, and compliance with organizational policies.
Essential Skills
Proven phlebotomy experience, with at least one year of active phlebotomy practice strongly preferred.
Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and blood draw techniques, including experience with high daily draw volumes.
Hands-on experience with specimen processing, including centrifuging and splitting samples.
Strong data entry skills with the ability to accurately enter orders and patient information into laboratory systems, including experience with or ability to learn the LabCorp Touch system.
High level of customer service skills, with the ability to interact professionally and courteously with patients and clinical staff.
Experience working in fast-paced environments, such as hospitals or high-volume patient service centers, with an expectation to learn quickly.
Comfort working with pediatric and geriatric patients, with experience in these populations preferred.
Ability to stand for approximately 50% of the workday and perform repetitive tasks in a clinical setting.
Willingness and ability to float between multiple locations as required.
Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) credential.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Hospital-based phlebotomy experience or similar high-acuity clinical experience is beneficial.
Experience working with geriatric patients is helpful and valued.
Comfort and confidence working in a very busy site with a high volume of patient interactions and blood draws.
Ability to adapt quickly to new systems, workflows, and locations during training and regular operations.
Strong communication skills for interacting with patients, coworkers, and physician offices.
Attention to detail and accuracy in specimen labeling, order entry, and patient verification.
Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workload, and maintain an efficient work area.
Reliability and flexibility to attend a two-week training program, including a 40-hour training week focused on entering and processing procedures.
Openness to working as part of a small team and supporting colleagues in a collaborative environment.
Work Environment
The position is based in a laboratory and medical environment within a patient service center that operates Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The site is very busy, with an average of around 120 blood draws per day, and requires working alongside another phlebotomist to manage patient flow and specimen processing. The role involves standing for approximately 50% of the day, performing frequent venipuncture, and handling specimens in a clinical setting. The phlebotomist primarily works at a patient service center in Laguna Hills, CA, and must be open to floating to up to five locations, mainly between Laguna Hills, Mission locations, and San Clemente. The environment uses laboratory technologies such as centrifuges and the LabCorp Touch system for order entry and data management. A structured two-week training program is provided, with the second week being a full-time 40-hour week focused on entering and processing procedures; training may take place in locations such as Wildomar, Tustin, or Los Angeles, and hotel accommodations may be provided if needed. The dress code aligns with a professional clinical and laboratory setting, requiring appropriate medical attire suitable for direct patient care and specimen handling.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $24.16 - $25.16/hr.
