Job Title: Medical Assistant
Job Description
This back-office Medical Assistant role focuses heavily on HIV testing, counseling, and phlebotomy within a high-volume, fast-paced community health clinic. The position supports underserved populations and requires compassion, cultural sensitivity, and a strong commitment to equitable, patient-centered care. You will work closely with providers and an interdisciplinary team to deliver high-quality clinical services, support HIV/STD prevention efforts, and ensure accurate documentation and compliance.
Responsibilities
Perform high-volume phlebotomy, including blood draws, finger sticks, urine collection, and specimen processing.
Provide client-centered pre- and post-test HIV counseling to individuals seeking testing and related services.
Conduct HIV/STD risk assessments and deliver risk reduction and prevention education and coaching.
Take and record vital signs, height, weight, and body mass index (BMI), and document basic medical history.
Room patients, prepare charts, and ensure treatment rooms are neat, clean, and fully stocked with necessary supplies and equipment.
Maintain sanitary and sterile supplies and equipment in accordance with clinic protocols.
Assist physicians and nurses during examinations and procedures, including handling instruments, preparing and disinfecting treatment sites, and applying and removing dressings and bandages.
Perform urine dipstick tests and finger-stick tests for hemoglobin and glucose measurements, and log all specimens accurately for testing.
Provide rapid HIV testing and counseling to clients, ensuring a supportive and confidential environment.
Support linkage to HIV primary care for newly diagnosed patients, individuals who have never engaged in care, and patients who have disengaged from treatment, using focused strategies to improve ongoing engagement.
Maintain monthly equipment logs (such as for testing devices, Hemocue, and related clinical equipment) to ensure proper functioning and compliance.
Support referral submission and tracking to ensure patients receive appropriate follow-up and specialty care.
Assist with patient discharge processes and provide clear follow-up instructions as directed by providers.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with funder requirements and Quality Management standards.
Ensure HIPAA compliance and protect patient confidentiality at all times.
Greet and register patients when needed, assist with completion of necessary forms, answer telephones, schedule appointments, retrieve medical files, and maintain medical records as needed to support clinic operations.
Demonstrate reliable attendance and punctuality to support consistent, high-quality patient care.
Collaborate effectively with clinical staff, social workers, housing specialists, and other team members to provide coordinated, patient-centered services.
Essential Skills
Medical Assistant diploma or certificate from a recognized institution.
Current CPR/BLS certification.
Experience using Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems.
Minimum of 2 years of Medical Assistant experience preferred; candidates with at least 1 year of experience will be considered if they have strong phlebotomy experience, HIV experience, or CMA/CPT certification.
Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including high-volume blood draws, finger sticks, and specimen collection.
Experience in HIV testing, counseling, or HIV-focused care strongly preferred.
Ability to perform HIV/STD risk assessments and provide prevention education and counseling.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation to meet funder and Quality Management requirements.
Ability to commit to a full-time, Monday-Friday onsite schedule.
Consistently reliable attendance and punctuality.
Ability to maintain strict HIPAA compliance and protect patient confidentiality.
Comfort working in a high-volume, fast-paced clinical environment.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to provide compassionate, client-centered care to diverse and underserved populations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) credential, with potential for additional pay upon conversion.
Experience in primary care, community health, nonprofit, or Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) settings.
HIV clinics or HIV-focused care, which is a major differentiator for this role.
Experience in hospital, emergency room, or urgent care environments.
Spanish language skills are a plus but not required.
Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team including social workers, housing specialists, and clinical staff.
Strong commitment to mission-driven, equitable, and patient-centered care.
Comfort providing counseling and education on sensitive topics such as HIV/STD risk, prevention, and linkage to care.

You will work in a tight-knit, long-tenured clinic team that is mission-driven and deeply focused on serving the community. The setting is high-volume and fast-paced, requiring the ability to multitask and stay organized while maintaining high standards of patient care. The clinic operates Monday through Friday with a full-time, onsite schedule, and there may be potential to float to other areas if needed after conversion. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $24.00/hr.
