Summary This position is located at VA Altoona in the Patient Care Service Line. The Escort performs clinical transport and delivery functions in accordance with facility policy. Responsibilities Major duties include, but may not be limited to: Provides transport/escort of patients to and from clinical units, clinics, and ancillary departments of the medical center and other off-station appointments. Assists nursing staff to transfer patients to and from bed to wheelchair/litter/vehicle. Provides pickup and delivery of diagnostic specimens, pharmacy requests and non-narcotic medications, medical records, supplies, equipment, and patient clothing and other errands as assigned. Provides emotional support to patients/families through a kind, caring manner. Recognizes obvious physical and behavioral changes in patients and responds appropriately. Use and the care of standard equipment and supplies. Responds appropriately and seeks assistance during emergencies. Applies the principles of good body mechanics and standard precautions while performing patient care duties. Assists with toileting and basic personal care while maintaining privacy and dignity of the patient. Practices standard precautions and appropriate isolation techniques. Assures availability of functioning wheelchairs and litters and maintains proper storage of equipment. Follows established safety practices and reports to the supervisor, as promptly as possible, unsafe conditions and unsafe or broken equipment, unsafe practices or occupational illness or injury which is sustained. Adheres to all safety and health standards, regulations, and work practices and uses proper protective equipment as required. Performs other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work includes lifting, walking, pushing, stooping, reaching, standing, sitting, and bending. Proper body mechanics must be utilized. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
