Description We are looking for an Accounting Specialist to support core accounting operations for a team in Washington, District of Columbia. This contract opportunity with permanent potential is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, dependable, and comfortable managing day-to-day financial activities while helping maintain accurate records and reporting. The person in this role will contribute to transaction processing, account balancing, and month-end support in a fast-paced office environment.

Responsibilities:

Process vendor invoices, review payment documentation, and help ensure accounts payable activity is completed accurately and on schedule.

Prepare and record journal entries to support routine accounting transactions and maintain the integrity of the general ledger.

Reconcile bank accounts and investigate discrepancies by coordinating with internal records and supporting documentation.

Assist with the preparation of financial statements and related reports by organizing data and verifying account balances.

Support daily accounting operations by maintaining financial records, tracking transactions, and following established controls.

Collaborate with the Comptroller and other team members to resolve accounting issues and improve the accuracy of reporting.

Contribute to month-end and periodic close activities by reviewing entries, reconciling accounts, and organizing backup materials. Requirements - Experience supporting accounts payable processes and other core accounting activities.

Working knowledge of journal entries, account reconciliation, and general ledger maintenance.

Ability to prepare or assist with financial statements and related accounting reports.

Proficiency in reconciling bank accounts and researching variances independently.

Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks accurately and meet deadlines.

Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with accounting leadership and staff.

Prior experience in an accounting clerk, staff accountant, or similar accounting support role.
