Field Mechanical Engineer
Job Description
This field mechanical engineer role focuses on leading mechanical building system startups and commissioning activities for large industrial and manufacturing facilities. The position oversees mechanical construction in the field, ensures compliance with codes and standards, and serves as a key liaison between construction teams and project management. The engineer provides technical expertise on mechanical systems, coordinates equipment delivery and installation, and supports long-term construction projects in a stable, growth-oriented environment.
Responsibilities
Facilitate mechanical building system startups and commissioning activities for industrial and manufacturing facilities.
Provide subject matter expert support in reviewing product and equipment submittals, shop drawings, engineering design drawings, specifications, and contractor RFIs.
Apply extensive knowledge of safety procedures and OSHA requirements, including Lock-Out, Electrical Safe Work Practices, Control of Hazardous Energy, and arc flash safety.
Ensure compliance with building codes and industry standards such as IBC, NEC, NESC, NFPA, AMCA, ARI, AWS, ASHRAE, and FM when reviewing and implementing mechanical systems.
Coordinate equipment factory testing, delivery, installation, commissioning, and handover to end users.
Plan and coordinate weekend work and plant shutdown activities with contractors, plant facilities groups, and manufacturing shops.
Conduct continuous work progress inspections to verify quality, schedule adherence, and alignment with project requirements.
Support construction administration activities, including scheduling, quality confirmations, coordination meetings, and utility outages.
Inspect mechanical systems for compliance with specifications, quality standards, and applicable codes.
Oversee mechanical contractors to ensure adherence to project delivery methods, schedule milestones, and coordination requirements.
Prepare detailed field engineering status reports for project managers and stakeholders.
Provide input to improve project technical specifications, standards, and best practices based on field observations.
Communicate technical matters clearly and effectively in both written and verbal formats to diverse project teams.
Manage multiple tasks, prioritize project commitments, and maintain effective time management in a fast-paced construction environment.
Implement building construction projects to support site needs, with a focus on mechanical and utilities systems.
Coordinate construction scheduling and communication among contractors, facilities, and project teams.
Manage daily construction activities and RFI support, ensuring timely resolution of field issues.
Act as a liaison between field construction teams and project management to align expectations, resolve conflicts, and maintain project momentum.
Assist with estimates, schedules, materials, and purchase orders as needed to support project delivery.
Supervise construction activity in the field, with particular emphasis on mechanical systems and equipment installation.
Develop and coordinate weekend and shutdown work plans to minimize production impact while achieving project goals.
Coordinate equipment delivery, installation, and scheduling to align with project milestones and commissioning timelines.
Apply knowledge of general building construction methods to support mechanical and utilities projects.
Monitor equipment installation for compliance with design drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
Coordinate RFIs and Field Change Orders, ensuring accurate documentation and communication of changes.
Support building systems startups and commissioning for HVAC, piping, utilities, and other mechanical systems in industrial and commercial-@type environments.
Utilize tools such as AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and project management software to review designs, track progress, and document field activities.
Collaborate with project teams to ensure mechanical systems are integrated effectively within overall building construction.
Essential Skills
10+ years of experience in industrial or commercial construction projects, with a focus on mechanical systems.
Strong technical knowledge of construction means and methods, particularly for mechanical building systems.
Proven ability to review drawings and apply them effectively in the field.
OSHA 10 certification.
Demonstrated ability to manage construction schedules on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
Ability to stand, stoop, and walk in large industrial plants for extended periods.
Ability to ascend and descend stairs to access roofs and equipment rooms.
Experience in developing mechanical system design criteria.
Background in automotive or industrial manufacturing environments.
5+ years of experience in the mechanical design field.
Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Project.
Proficiency in AutoCAD and Bluebeam.
Mechanical engineering expertise related to construction and building systems.
Experience with building systems startups and commissioning, including HVAC and piping.
Knowledge of general building construction methods in industrial or manufacturing settings.
Ability to coordinate RFIs, Field Change Orders, and construction documentation.
Capability to supervise field construction and interact effectively with contractors and facilities teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
PMP certification is highly desirable.
OSHA 30 certification is preferred.
Familiarity with Autodesk Construction Cloud or Autodesk Build is an advantage.
Experience with construction management and project management in industrial or commercial-@type environments.
Experience with HVAC systems, piping, mechanical utilities, and building systems in industrial facilities.
Exposure to civil and utilities engineering within industrial or manufacturing projects.
Experience using Bluebeam for drawing review and markups.
Familiarity with industrial and commercial construction practices and building system commissioning.
Knowledge of industry standards and codes such as IBC, NEC, NESC, NFPA, AMCA, ARI, AWS, ASHRAE, and FM.
Comfort working in long-term, open-ended contract environments with multi-year project planning horizons.
Ability to relocate at own expense if necessary.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $63.00/hr.
