Communications and External Affairs (CXA) tells the story of MITRE's research, scientific breakthroughs, and public impact. The department brings together a team of 30+ writers, editors, multimedia and social media professionals, designers, public and government relations experts, and event strategists who shape and amplify the company's voice across internal and external stakeholders.
The CXA Strategy and Operations Principal is a critical role within CXA, responsible for helping translate the organization's strategy into coordinated action across the enterprise. This position partners closely with the Vice President and CXA leadership team to execute the function's strategy, ensuring that priorities are converted into clear workstreams, decisions, deliverables, and measurable outcomes.
This role combines strategic execution, integrated content leadership, creative direction, and cross-functional program oversight. The CXA Strategy Execution & Integrated Content Lead will help execute on leadership-determined, large-scale initiatives that engage target audiences, advance enterprise priorities, and align with broader business goals.
In addition to leading complex initiatives from concept to execution, this role provides chief-of-staff-style support to the Vice President by helping organize priorities, prepare leadership materials, coordinate follow-through, and maintain visibility across key strategic actions. The position requires strong enterprise judgment, creative leadership, operational discipline, and the ability to direct teams from strategy through execution with clarity and precision.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Strategy Execution and CXA Leadership Support
Translate strategic priorities into clear actions, owners, timelines, workstreams, and measurable deliverables.
Partner with the Vice President to support leadership planning, decision-making, meeting preparation, follow-up, and priority management.
Track key strategic commitments and ensure accountability across teams and initiatives.
Proactively identify gaps, dependencies, risks, and barriers that may affect execution, and help resolve or escalate them as appropriate. Bring solutions to table to help address challenges.
Connect priorities across the CXA portfolio to ensure work remains aligned, coordinated, and focused on enterprise impact.
Enterprise Initiative and Program Leadership
Lead leadership-determined, large-scale initiatives from concept through execution.
Define timelines, success measures, and delivery plans for strategic objectives.
Assemble and lead cross-functional teams across PR, marketing, content, creative, digital, business units, and other internal partners.
Ensure initiatives are delivered with creativity, precision, efficiency, and measurable results.
Maintain alignment between project outcomes, CXA strategy, audience needs, and broader business goals.
Drive progress across complex workstreams, ensuring decisions are made, actions are completed, and deliverables move forward.
Partner with Enterprise Technology to integrate and implement new software into daily workflows, ensuring department continuity and boosting delivery efficiency
Integrated Content and Creative Direction
Collaborate with leadership to ensure content is cohesive, strategically aligned, audience-focused, and appropriate for each platform or channel.
Champion innovative approaches that improve audience engagement and strengthen enterprise communications.
Anticipate dependencies and resolve issues that could delay execution or dilute impact.
Manage project plans, timelines, risks, approvals, and status reporting to keep initiatives on track.
Stakeholder Engagement and Alignment
Build trusted relationships across the enterprise to improve collaboration and accelerate progress.
Identify competing priorities, risks, and challenges early and work with leaders to address them.
Reporting, Insights, and Performance Measurement
Provide regular updates to the Vice President, CXA leadership team, and key stakeholders on project status, risks, decisions, and outcomes.
Lead and manage agendas for team meetings and special project meetings.
Develop leadership briefings, dashboards, status reports, recaps, and performance summaries.
Track quantitative metrics and qualitative feedback to evaluate initiative performance and content effectiveness.
Capture lessons learned and apply them to future CXA strategy execution and integrated content efforts.
Basic Qualifications:
Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 8 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 5 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience
Strong communications background with demonstrated experience developing, managing, and executing strategic communications, content, marketing, or enterprise engagement initiatives.
Proven ability to manage large, complex, cross-functional projects from concept through execution, including planning, coordination, stakeholder alignment, delivery, and measurement.
Experience translating strategy into actionable plans, workstreams, timelines, deliverables, and measurable outcomes.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex priorities into clear, compelling messaging for different audiences.
Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities, deadlines, dependencies, risks, and approvals across multiple teams.
Experience leading cross-functional teams and coordinating communications, PR, government relations, marketing, creative, digital, business, and leadership stakeholders.
Ability to provide creative direction and guide integrated content development in partnership with subject matter experts and creative teams.
Strong analytical skills with experience using quantitative metrics and qualitative feedback to assess performance, generate insights, and recommend improvements.
Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution, ensuring both big-picture alignment and high-quality delivery.
Experience in creating repeatable processes, frameworks, dashboards, or reporting tools to improve operational effectiveness.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong executive presence and judgment, with experience supporting senior leaders, preparing leadership materials, and communicating with executive-level stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships, influence without direct authority, and align stakeholders around shared goals
Highly organized, proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
Bachelor's or Master's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, business, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience will also be considered.
