This Senior Accountant role supports a mission-driven, remote-first nonprofit organization by leading core accounting operations across three entities, including a 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and a single-member LLC. The position focuses on monthly close, payroll support, vendor and expense processing, and compliance with US GAAP and nonprofit-specific accounting rules. This is a temporary assignment of approximately 24 weeks, during which you will help maintain a 10-day close period, support annual audits and Form 990 preparation, and ensure accurate time tracking and billing for each entity.
Responsibilities
Perform monthly accounting close activities, including preparing journal entries and compiling monthly and annual account reconciliations, to maintain a 10-day close period across three entities.
Assist in processing semi-monthly payroll and 401(k) contributions, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
Review and process third-party vendor invoices and employee reimbursements, verifying proper approvals and documentation.
Ensure employee credit card charges are accurately coded to the appropriate accounts and entities.
Help maintain compliance with US GAAP and applicable 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) accounting rules.
Contribute to the preparation of schedules and supporting documentation for annual financial audits.
Support the preparation of information and schedules required for Form 990 production.
Track time and billing separately for each entity, including the 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and single-member LLC.
Collaborate with the finance team to address accounting issues, streamline processes, and support continuous improvement in financial operations.
Work independently in a remote environment while managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field.
Typically 3-7 years of professional experience in accounting.
Experience with nonprofit accounting, particularly for 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations.
Prior experience working with Sage Intacct.
Prior experience working with Ramp.
Prior experience working with Paychex.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel.
Proficiency with Google Suite tools.
Strong understanding of US GAAP.
Ability to perform month-end close, including journal entries and account reconciliations.
Experience with payroll processing and 401(k) contribution handling.
Experience reviewing and processing invoices, reimbursements, and credit card transactions.
Ability to prepare schedules and documentation for financial audits and Form 990.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in financial data.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience working in a remote-first organization.
Comfort working across multiple legal entities, including a 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and single-member LLC.
Familiarity with time tracking and billing by entity or project.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines, such as a 10-day close.
Effective communication skills for collaborating with finance colleagues and other stakeholders.
Interest in or familiarity with mission-driven and nonprofit work.
Work Environment
This role operates in a remote-first environment, allowing you to work from your preferred location while collaborating virtually with the finance team. You will report to the Director of Finance and work alongside another Senior Accountant, using tools such as Sage Intacct, Ramp, Paychex, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite to complete your work. The organization manages three entities-a 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and a single-member LLC-so you will regularly track time and billing by entity. The pace is fast, with a 10-day monthly close cycle and overlapping priorities, and the culture emphasizes mission-driven work, collaboration, and accountability in a fully remote setting.
