Position Summary...
What you'll do...
Join Walmart Global Tech as a Principal Software Engineer and shape the future of cross-border commerce at scale. In this high-impact role within our Growth Tech Marketplace organization, you'll define the technical strategy, architect resilient distributed systems, and drive engineering excellence across cross-border trade initiatives that connect millions of customers and sellers worldwide.
About Team:
Our team creates reusable technologies to help with customer acquisition, onboarding, and empowering merchants, while ensuring a seamless experience for both of these stakeholders. We also optimize tariffs and assortment in accordance with Walmart's Everyday Low Cost philosophy. We not only create affordability, but we also deliver customized experiences for customers across all channels - in-store, mobile app, and websites.
What you'll do: 1. Define and Own Technical Strategy Define and drive the long-term technical roadmap for cross-border trade systems within Walmart's Marketplace platform, aligning engineering investments with business growth objectives and ensuring architectural decisions scale to support global commerce at Walmart's pace. 2. Architect Resilient, Scalable Distributed Systems Lead end-to-end architecture for mission-critical cross-border commerce services - including order orchestration, seller integrations, compliance, and payments infrastructure - establishing system design patterns that prioritize reliability, low latency, and regulatory compliance across international markets. 3. Set and Elevate Engineering Standards Author and approve org-level Architecture Decision Records (ADRs); champion engineering excellence through code quality governance (SonarQube, Snyk, Gatekeeper), SDLC compliance, and AI-augmented development practices (Wibey, GitHub Copilot) that raise the bar across multiple squads. 4. Lead Cross-Functional Technical Alignment Serve as the primary technical authority for Growth Tech Marketplace, partnering with Product, Design, and Senior Leadership (Directors, VPs) to translate complex business requirements into executable technical plans - including feasibility assessments, risk identification, and build-vs-buy decisions. 5. Mentor and Grow Engineering Talent Cultivate a strong engineering culture by mentoring Staff and Senior engineers, leading design reviews, and establishing technical communities of practice that accelerate skill development and knowledge sharing across the CBT organization.
What you'll bring: 1. Architectural Mastery at Hyperscale Proven ability to design, build, and evolve large-scale distributed systems - ideally in commerce, marketplace, or cross-border platforms - with deep expertise in microservices, event-driven architecture, API design, and cloud-native infrastructure (Kubernetes/WCNP, GCP/Azure). 2. Strategic Technical Thinking Ability to translate ambiguous, high-stakes business problems into clear, phased technical strategies - balancing short-term delivery with long-term platform health, and making principled build-vs-buy-vs-partner decisions in a fast-moving global commerce environment. 3. Cross-Border & Regulatory Domain Fluency Familiarity with the technical complexities of international commerce - including multi-currency, customs/duties compliance, seller onboarding across markets, localization, and data sovereignty requirements - enabling sound architectural decisions that are both scalable and globally compliant. 4. Technical Leadership & Influence Without Authority Track record of aligning diverse engineering teams, PMs, and senior stakeholders around a unified technical vision - driving adoption of standards and best practices through credibility, communication, and mentorship rather than positional authority. 5. AI-Augmented Engineering Mindset Comfort operating in an AI-driven development lifecycle - using agentic tools (Wibey, GitHub Copilot, etc.) to multiply personal and team throughput, while maintaining rigorous judgment over AI-generated outputs, particularly in high-compliance, revenue-critical systems.
