Job Description
An established Inland Northwest geotechnical firm is seeking a Certified Construction Materials Testing Technician to join its growing team in Missoula, Montana. In this role, you perform field and laboratory testing on construction materials, monitor construction operations, and support special inspections to ensure that projects meet plans, specifications, and quality standards. You work closely with project managers and field personnel to provide accurate data, clear documentation, and timely reporting that support safe, durable, and compliant construction across western Montana.
Responsibilities
Conduct construction materials testing in the field and laboratory, including soil, aggregate, asphalt, and concrete testing, to verify compliance with project specifications.
Perform soil, aggregate, and asphalt density testing using appropriate equipment and procedures, including nuclear density gauges, and document results accurately.
Conduct concrete testing and inspection, such as sampling, slump testing, air content, temperature measurements, and casting cylinders, in accordance with applicable standards and certifications.
Monitor construction operations to ensure materials and workmanship comply with project plans, specifications, and relevant codes.
Perform special inspections, as qualified and certified, in areas such as reinforced concrete, pre-stressed concrete, structural masonry, and post-tensioned concrete.
Collect representative soil, aggregate, asphalt, and concrete samples from job sites and ensure proper handling, labeling, and chain of custody.
Record field observations, test data, and inspection findings in a clear, organized manner using a computer and/or mobile device.
Prepare concise, accurate daily field reports and testing summaries for project managers and other stakeholders.
Communicate proactively with project managers, contractors, and other team members to address nonconformances, clarify specifications, and resolve field issues.
Follow established quality control and quality assurance procedures to maintain consistency and reliability in test results.
Operate, maintain, and calibrate testing equipment, including nuclear density gauges, in accordance with safety and regulatory requirements.
Travel throughout the western Montana service region to support multiple projects and job sites as needed.
Safely lift and carry equipment and materials up to 50 pounds independently and maneuver up to 75 pounds with assistance while working in the field.
Essential Skills
Experience in construction materials testing, including soil, aggregate, asphalt, and concrete testing in field and/or laboratory environments.
Demonstrated ability to perform concrete testing and inspection in accordance with industry standards.
Proficiency in using nuclear density gauges for soil and asphalt density testing, with appropriate nuclear gauge safety training.
WAQTC certification and/or ACI Field Testing Technician, Grade I or above (preferred but treated as a key qualification).
High school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to use a computer and/or mobile device to complete daily field reports and documentation.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and maneuver up to 75 pounds with assistance.
Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout the western Montana service region.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality control and compliance with plans and specifications.
Effective communication skills to work closely with project managers, contractors, and team members in a collaborative environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Associate of Arts (AA) in Civil Engineering Technology preferred.
ICC Special Inspection Certification in one or more of the following categories is preferred: Reinforced Concrete, Pre-Stressed Concrete, Structural Masonry, Post-Tensioned Concrete.
Coursework in geology, soil sampling, or related earth sciences is beneficial.
Experience in construction inspection and quality control (QC) on active construction sites.
Familiarity with construction materials handling and field sampling procedures.
Ability to manage multiple assignments across different job sites and adapt to changing project needs.

Work Environment
This role is primarily field-based and involves working on active construction sites throughout western Montana. You spend much of your time outdoors performing tests, inspections, and sampling in varying weather conditions and terrain. The position requires frequent travel within the region, driving to and from job sites with testing equipment. You use specialized field equipment, including nuclear density gauges and concrete testing tools, along with computers or mobile devices for reporting and documentation. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $26.00/hr.
