Emergency Department Nurse Manager

Salary Range: $56.92 - $78.47

Pay rates are determined based on experience and internal equity.

Position Summary:

This position reports to the Director of Department.

Responsible for nursing care of patients in the Emergency Department.

Coordinates activities that support all aspects of patient care in that department.

Works with other directors and staff to develop a fiscally sound budget that meets patient needs, staffing criteria and the goals of the District.

Monitors that budget and can explain variances.

Supervises/delegates nursing care given by nursing staff, assistive personnel, and students. Supervises staff members during shift and directs unit nursing personnel. Provides input regarding staff performance.

Assigns responsibility for completion of specific shift duties to appropriate nursing personnel.

Coordinates patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.

Re-evaluates patient care as patient/unit conditions change.

Assesses options and takes appropriate course of action in over- and under-staffed conditions.

Documents all cases of misconduct and intervenes as appropriate.

Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice.

Remains flexible to changing systems.

Treats patients, families, visitors, peers and physicians with consideration and respect.

Communicates concerns appropriately using the established chain of command.

Must work well with supervisors, co-workers, patients, family members and visitors.

Nurse Manager will take patients with an overall lower acuity in addition to being in charge if there is a call-in or unit census has changed.

Ensures patient care coverage is maintained during those times when staff leave the unit for breaks/meals.

District Responsibility

Develops and works within a department budget.

Maintains all principles of confidentiality according to District policy and as required by State and Federal agencies.

Follows guidelines and practices identified in the Employee Handbook.

Is a leader in continuous quality improvement activities within the Department and the District.

Participates in the development of skills criteria annually and as needed.

Complies with annual PPD testing, and FIT testing.

Maintains responsibility for own professional development.

Assesses own performance using insight and constructive feedback to set goals and to enrich knowledge and skills to perform role.

Supports the District Mission , Vision and Values.

Demonstrate Respect, Professionalism and Courtesy to all patients, visitors, other providers and coworkers, as delineated in the LVMC "Commitment to Care".

Constantly use C-I-CARE principles when communicating with others.

Professional Development

Position Duties/Responsibilities:

Is fluent in Standards of Practice for Emergency Care Nursing and assures that they are followed. Fluent in ENA professional standards.

Is knowledgeable of JCAHO standards, Title 22, CMS regulations and any other federal or state guidelines that impact patient care in the Emergency Department and disperses that information to staff appropriately.

Ensures that all licensure requirements/credentials/certificates for applicable personnel are valid and current.

Conducts department meetings and disperses information appropriately.

Ensures adequate staffing to meet the department's function and purpose.

Maintains a positive work environment for staff and physicians.

Promotes team efforts.

Communicates openly and honestly in written and verbal format.

Monitors nursing practice to assure all guidelines are met.

Works with Human Resources to develop marketing plans to attract nursing staff to the department.

Provides support and guidance for staff and is responsible for sharing information appropriately.

Monitors orientation of staff in the Emergency Department to assure adequate training and support are provided.

Demonstrates the knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to monitor care to assure that it is appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Demonstrates Competencies by ability to help staff with patient care.

Works with Director for unit specific measures to include, but not limited to, Stroke Certification, Geriatric Care, Sepsis metrics, ED specific Core Measures and BETA Quest for Zero.

Participates with ED specific quality improvement projects, plan of correction, survey readiness, and grievance committee.

Other Duties Assigned by Supervisor

Essential Functions:

The ability to maintain a current nursing license.

Demonstrates the ability to function as a team member.

The ability to work as a Team.

The ability to have positive personal interactions with staff, patients, visitors and physicians.

Position Qualifications:

Education: Current California license as an RN. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferred. Emergency RN Certification is preferred. TNCC preferred.

Experience: At least 3 years of clinical Emergency RN experience with demonstrated leadership abilities.

Cert/license: California RN , BLS, ACLS, PALS required from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Skills/Ability: Excellent clinical skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Computer skills required. Exhibits the ability to organize work assignments and follow through with accuracy. Exercises good judgment, demonstrates initiative, emotional stability, tact and poise.
