Minnesota IT Services (MNIT) is seeking a skilled and motivated Information Security Analyst to support core security monitoring and incident response activities within the Enterprise or Agency Information Security Program. This role plays a critical part in protecting State of Minnesota information assets by identifying, investigating, and responding to current and emerging security threats.
The Information Security Analyst will work within one or more security domains, which may include system access, network and telecommunication security, application and system development security, cryptography, operational security, incident management, legal investigations, and business continuity and disaster recovery.
As a key member of the Security Operations Center (SOC), the position will triage reported or detected security events, perform initial investigation and documentation, and resolve incidents when possible. The position collaborates closely with MNIT partners, internal MNIT teams, agency staff, and external stakeholders to assess events, gather evidence, analyze security data, and ensure timely escalation of urgent or complex incidents to senior incident handlers.
This role is essential in maintaining situational awareness, strengthening the state's security posture, and supporting a coordinated and effective incident response process.
This position is telework (https://mn.gov/mmb-stat/policies/1422-telework.pdf) eligible for applicants who reside in Minnesota or in a bordering state, with supervisory approval and satisfactory performance. If you live in a state bordering Minnesota, you must live within 50 miles or less from the primary work location to be eligible for telework. Telework arrangements and policy updates may be adjusted based on business needs.
Minimum Qualifications

Position requires a minimum of three (3) years of IT related experience in security monitoring, incident response, and operational security.
Experience must include:
Working in a Security Operations Center (SOC) using monitoring and security tools such as endpoint protection, log management, enterprise firewalls, intrusion detection, web content filtering, or similar technologies used for security and endpoint management.
Knowledge of network protocols/ports, network devices, and multiple operating systems.
Ability to analyze network traffic including TCP/IP, UDP, DNS, firewalls, proxies, SIEM, antivirus, and IDPS concepts.
Experience with intrusion detection/prevention systems (e.g., Checkpoint, Sourcefire, McAfee, Palo Alto, Tipping Point, Snort).
Experience with security incident handling including identifying, evaluating, documenting, and defining risks and response actions.
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively in a manner that facilitates mutual understanding.
Customer-focused approach grounded in active listening, empathy, and solution-oriented problem-solving to deliver positive user experiences.
Education in Information Technology (IT) or an IT related field may substitute for experience as follows: a master's degree for eighteen (18) months of experience; a bachelor's degree for one (1) year; and an associate's degree for six (6) months.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience performing in-depth cyber analysis and providing actionable intelligence to support security monitoring and incident response.
Experience configuring, tuning, or troubleshooting intrusion detection systems or firewalls (e.g., Checkpoint, Sourcefire, Palo Alto, Cisco ASA).
Experience coordinating cybersecurity incident response efforts, including documentation, stakeholder communication, task tracking, and after-action reporting.
Experience developing or automating workflows including the use of AI-based tools for security operations or documentation.
Experience with scripting or query languages to support automation, analysis, or security tooling (e.g., log analysis or threat hunting).
