Description
Help shape the future of Lee County by supporting responsible growth, environmental stewardship, and high-quality development review services. As an Environmental Plan Reviewer within the Development Services Section, you will play a vital role in reviewing complex development applications, analyzing environmental impacts, and ensuring projects align with the Land Development Code, the Lee Plan, and best environmental practices.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys research, problem-solving, collaboration, technical analysis, and working with a variety of professionals to support sustainable development in unincorporated Lee County.
Duties and Responsibilities
What You'll Do
Environmental Review & Technical Analysis
Conduct detailed reviews of development order applications for compliance with environmental standards and the Lee County Comprehensive Plan
Review landscape plans, vegetation removal permits, indigenous management plans, and protected species surveys
Research the Land Development Code, Lee Plan, and applicable state and federal environmental regulations
Analyze environmental and land-use documentation, including surveys, plans, reports, and supporting materials
Prepare high-quality written reports, maps, charts, and graphics to support findings and recommendations
Fieldwork & Site Inspections
Perform on-site field inspections before, during, and after construction
Verify accuracy of species surveys and other environmental documentation submitted with applications
Assist with environmental and landscape inspections to ensure compliance with approved plans and County requirements
Collaboration & Technical Assistance
Work closely with applicants, landowners, attorneys, landscape architects, engineers, and consultants
Provide customer service and technical guidance to external applicants and internal County departments
Collaborate with colleagues across the organization during project reviews
Communicate effectively to resolve issues and identify solutions
Public Engagement & Communication
Attend and participate in public meetings and hearings as needed
Present environmental findings and recommendations clearly in written and verbal formats
Maintain strong working relationships with community stakeholders, property owners, and members of the public

What We're Looking For
Minimum Requirements
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to:
High School graduation or GED equivalent
Four years of construction, building, plans review, or closely related experience
Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
Preferred Qualifications
Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in environmental studies, biology, zoology, botany, environmental sciences, natural resources, landscape architecture, or a closely related field
One (1) year of experience in environmental review, natural resources, land-use planning, or a related field
Knowledge of Southwest Florida ecosystems, habitats, and listed species
Ability to read and interpret landscape and engineering plans
Ideal Candidate Strengths
Strong understanding of state, federal, and local environmental regulations
Knowledge of environmental planning principles and land-development practices
Ability to perform detailed field observations and environmental assessments
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM

About the Department
The Development Services Section of Lee County Community Development plays a key role in shaping sustainable and well-planned communities throughout unincorporated Lee County. The team oversees development order reviews, environmental analysis, vegetation permitting, plats, and related land-use processes, working closely with residents, contractors, consultants, and partner agencies to support responsible development and community standards.
