Job Title: Maintenance Mechanic
Job Description
This role performs and supports a wide range of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, welding, and fabrication work to keep production equipment operating safely and efficiently. The Maintenance Mechanic coordinates and executes general repairs, equipment installations, and preventive maintenance activities on processing equipment while ensuring compliance with plant rules, safety standards, and good housekeeping practices.
Responsibilities
Perform general maintenance, repair, and adjustment of production and processing equipment to ensure reliable operation.
Connect and disconnect electric motors safely and correctly as part of equipment installation, repair, and replacement activities.
Operate test instruments and shop tools such as drill presses, saws, grinders, and related equipment to diagnose issues and complete repairs.
Perform basic stick welding and basic torch welding to support equipment repair and fabrication needs.
Conduct preventive maintenance on production equipment, including inspections, lubrication, and component replacement, to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
Oversee the activities of hourly Mechanics and Maintenance Helpers, providing guidance and support to ensure work is completed safely and effectively.
Maintain compliance with safety standards for all equipment, tools, and maintenance procedures, and promptly report any hazards or unsafe conditions.
Promote safety and good housekeeping practices in all work areas, ensuring tools and materials are stored properly and workspaces remain clean and organized.
Maintain compliance with all plant rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures related to maintenance and production.
Install new equipment as required, including mechanical and electrical components, and verify proper operation after installation.
Communicate clearly with supervisors, peers, and production staff regarding equipment status, repair needs, and maintenance schedules.
Use troubleshooting and problem-solving skills to identify root causes of equipment issues and implement effective solutions.
Plan and organize maintenance work to minimize disruption to production and ensure timely completion of tasks.
Essential Skills
Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
3-5 years of electrical and/or mechanical experience in a maintenance or similar role.
Ability to perform general maintenance on production and processing equipment.
Ability to safely connect and disconnect motors and related electrical components.
Proficiency in operating test instruments and shop tools such as drill presses, saws, and grinders.
Ability to perform basic stick welding and basic torch welding for repair and fabrication tasks.
Strong mechanical and/or electrical skills with the ability to diagnose and repair equipment issues.
Good overall knowledge of processing operations and equipment commonly used in a processing environment.
Good written and verbal communication skills to document work and coordinate with team members.
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills to quickly identify and resolve equipment problems.
Good planning and organization skills to manage multiple maintenance tasks and priorities.
Willingness and ability to work the specified weekend shift schedule after training.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Technical school education or coursework in a mechanical, electrical, or industrial maintenance discipline is preferred.
2-3 years of experience in a processing environment is preferred.
Experience with preventive maintenance programs, including scheduling and documentation.
Experience with wiring, motors, and fabrication work in an industrial setting.
Ability to provide guidance and informal leadership to Mechanics and Maintenance Helpers.
Comfort working in environments with strong odors and airborne particulates, consistent with processing operations.

Work Environment
This position is based in a processing plant environment with active production lines and industrial equipment. The facility includes departments with very strong tobacco odors and areas with strong flavoring smells, so the atmosphere can be intense and aromatic. When production is running, there may be a visible light cloud or dust in the air, though it is described as not excessive. The role involves regular use of industrial tools and equipment such as test instruments, drill presses, saws, grinders, and welding equipment. The work schedule follows a weekend shift: Monday from 4:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday off, Thursday from 4:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Initial training is conducted on a Monday-Friday schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for approximately two weeks before transitioning to the weekend shift. The work requires adherence to plant safety rules, use of appropriate personal protective equipment, and maintaining clean, organized work areas in line with good housekeeping standards.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $30.00/hr.
