Job Title: Construction SuperintendentJob Description
The Construction Superintendent will lead tenant improvement and small commercial projects across the Indianapolis area, providing true general contractor-style field oversight rather than performing tools-on work. This field-based role (approximately 95% on job sites) focuses on schedule management, safety, sequencing, subcontractor coordination, documentation, and logistics, with the opportunity to grow into larger and potentially ground-up projects based on performance. The superintendent will manage commercial tenant improvement projects typically ranging from $500K to $1M (and up to around $2M depending on experience), often overseeing up to 10 workers or trade partners on-site during busy phases.
Responsibilities
Run tenant improvement and small commercial construction projects independently, providing strong field leadership and coordination.
Create, update, and maintain project schedules using AutoDesk scheduling tools, with a clear understanding of construction sequencing.
Develop short-interval look-ahead schedules and communicate upcoming constraints and needs to subcontractors and the project management team.
Lead jobsite safety efforts by enforcing safety practices, expectations, and compliance for all workers and trade partners on-site.
Manage jobsite logistics, including deliveries, site access, laydown areas, short material runs, and planning for trade stacking and sequencing.
Coordinate and manage subcontractors, ensuring accountability, resolving conflicts, and maintaining productivity and quality standards.
Read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings accurately to plan work sequencing, identify constructability issues early, and adjust field execution as needed.
Use Bluebeam to review, edit, and mark up drawings, including mapping out laydown areas and staging locations for framing and other trades.
Document project activities digitally by logging field updates, progress notes, issues, and constraints in an organized and timely manner.
Draft and send clear, professional emails to project stakeholders, including subcontractors and project managers, to communicate status, changes, and issues.
Collaborate closely with the project management team to escalate constraints and risks, propose solutions, and keep projects on schedule and on budget.
Monitor and manage jobsite staffing levels, coordinating approximately 10 workers or trade partners on-site during peak periods.
Travel regularly to jobsites in and around the Indianapolis market and to the home office as needed for coordination and meetings.
Ensure that work is executed in accordance with plans, specifications, and quality standards, and that punch list items are addressed promptly.
Support continuous improvement by identifying process efficiencies, contributing feedback, and helping refine field procedures as the company grows.
Essential Skills
2-5+ years of experience running construction jobs or large scopes of work with real responsibility for schedule, safety, and subcontractor coordination.
Ground-up construction experience on at least one project in the $5-$10 million range.
Proven experience as a construction superintendent or assistant superintendent with GC-style umbrella oversight responsibilities.
Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings and prints, and to translate plans into a practical, workable field sequence.
Ability to create and manage project schedules, including drafting basic schedules from plans even without scheduling software, with solid sequencing knowledge.
Proficiency using AutoDesk scheduling or related software tools for schedule development and maintenance.
Hands-on experience with Bluebeam, including the ability to edit and mark up drawings to define laydown areas, staging zones, and other site logistics.
Demonstrated capability to lead and coordinate a jobsite with approximately 10 trade partners or workers on site.
Subcontractor management skills, including coordination, accountability, and conflict resolution in a field environment.
Strong digital literacy and organizational skills, including the ability to document work electronically, track progress and issues, and avoid reliance on pen-and-paper only.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write professional emails and communicate clearly with field and office teams.
Proven conflict management and problem-solving skills, with the ability to address issues promptly and maintain productive relationships on site.
Self-starter mindset with a desire to grow with the company and take on increasing responsibility over time.
Experience with commercial construction, including tenant improvement, retail, and other small commercial projects.
Experience working on various project @types such as commercial, residential, institutional, or industrial construction.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Bilingual ability in Spanish and English is a strong plus, particularly for communication with a diverse field workforce.
Additional ground-up construction experience beyond the minimum requirement is a bonus and can support faster growth into larger projects.
College degree in Construction Management or a related field is preferred but not required.
Background coming from the trades with broad exposure to sequencing across multiple scopes (for example, drywall or similar trades that interact with many others) is beneficial.
Familiarity with construction management software and digital project tools is advantageous.
Interest in long-term career growth within a growing construction organization.
Strong communication and people skills, with the ability to build rapport and maintain positive working relationships with trade partners and project teams.
Work Environment
This role is primarily field-based, with approximately 95% of time spent on active construction sites in and around the Indianapolis market. The superintendent works on site five days per week, both inside and outside, often operating from a jobsite trailer and moving throughout the project as needed. The position requires working outdoors in various weather conditions and being on-site for extended hours, with occasional weekend or evening work depending on project schedules. Travel is required to multiple jobsites and to the downtown Indianapolis home office, with mileage and gas for travel beyond the assigned project reimbursed, particularly when monitoring multiple sites. Projects typically involve commercial tenant improvement and small commercial work, with initial project budgets in the $500K-$1M range and some projects reaching around $2M, and larger projects potentially reaching 20,000+ square feet. The work environment emphasizes safety, professional conduct, and digital documentation, using technologies such as AutoDesk scheduling tools, Bluebeam for drawing review and markups, and other digital communication platforms. The position offers a supportive culture with opportunities for growth, bonus eligibility while on contract-to-hire, reimbursement for gas beyond assigned projects, quarterly events and outings such as suite experiences at major sports venues, paid time off, and, once hired full-time, benefits including three weeks of PTO (with limited rollover), medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 401(k) with company match, and salary compensation that includes allowances for vehicle and phone expenses along with reimbursed project travel fuel.
