Job Title: Senior Mechanical EngineerJob Description
The Senior Mechanical Engineer leads the design and coordination of plant and piping layouts for power generation facilities, ensuring technically sound, compliant, and constructible solutions. This role focuses on balance-of-plant piping design, 3D plant modeling, and cross-functional technical interfaces, while providing field support during construction and commissioning and maintaining rigorous design control throughout project execution.
Responsibilities
Solve complex engineering problems related to plant and piping layout, ensuring all technical interfaces are clearly defined and properly coordinated.
Develop, maintain, and issue design specifications, drawings, and documentation for plant layout and piping systems.
Review internal proposals and customer documents to ensure clear understanding and accurate definition of technical requirements.
Coordinate the technical interface between gas turbines, steam turbines, plant engineering, internal architect/engineering teams, and external architect/engineering teams.
Implement the plant layout and piping scope in alignment with the overall project schedule and milestones.
Review architect/engineering designs and verify that all deliverables meet project-specific requirements and standards.
Provide field support during construction and commissioning for modular pipe racks, piping systems, and plant layout scope, addressing technical issues as they arise.
Manage the design control process during project implementation, including review and approval of design changes and review levels, and assess the impact of proposed changes on system performance.
Ensure reference plant design activities incorporate project-specific deliverables for piping and facilities, including facility general arrangement drawings, modular pipe rack detail drawings, and related piping documentation.
Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure integration of mechanical, piping, and plant layout designs within 3D models.
Utilize 3D plant design tools to review and validate piping and layout concepts, ensuring constructability and maintainability.
Support continuous improvement of design standards, methods, and tools related to plant layout and piping engineering.
Essential Skills
Four-year degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent engineering discipline from an accredited college or university.
At least 10 years of successful experience in the power generation industry, specifically in balance-of-plant piping design, including main steam, hot reheat, cold reheat, and related systems.
Demonstrated experience in pipe support selection and plant layout design for power generation facilities.
Familiarity with pipe stress analysis, piping fittings, and pipe specialties used in power generation plants.
Basic knowledge of thermal cycle engineering as it applies to power plant systems and operations.
Advanced knowledge of plant layout and piping design principles, standards, and best practices.
Ability to utilize NavisWorks software to review piping designs in 3D models developed by architect/engineering teams.
Proficiency in mechanical design and piping design for industrial or power generation environments.
Experience with 3D plant design tools and workflows for plant and piping modeling.
Professional Engineering (PE) license.
Strong leadership skills with the ability to lead and influence large multi-functional teams to achieve successful project outcomes.
Strong communication and coordination skills to manage technical interfaces among multiple stakeholders.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience working as a piping designer or mechanical designer in power generation or similar heavy industrial projects.
Hands-on experience with 3D plant design platforms such as Plant3D or similar 3D design tools.
Background in boilers and associated piping systems within power generation plants.
Ability to interpret and produce detailed general arrangement (GA) drawings and modular pipe rack detail drawings.
Experience reviewing and validating architect/engineering deliverables for consistency with project requirements.
Proven ability to manage design control processes, including evaluation of design changes and their impact on system performance.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment.
Strong problem-solving skills and a methodical approach to resolving complex mechanical and piping issues.
