Job Title: Manufacturing Engineer - Machining Launch Tooling Engineer
Job Description
This role focuses on launching a new machining line as a dedicated tooling engineer, working closely with the headquarters launch team and external suppliers to ensure the machining line is delivered successfully and meets all key business metrics for long-term operational success. The engineer applies strong manufacturing and machining expertise to develop, implement, and continuously improve tooling, processes, and controls for high-production gear machining operations.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with the headquarters launch team and suppliers to plan, coordinate, and execute the launch of an incoming machining line in alignment with key business metrics.
Develop, refine, and validate machining processes with a strong focus on tool development for high-production machining operations.
Lead the implementation of GTSV tool tracking systems to monitor, control, and optimize tooling usage and performance.
Identify tool-dominant features in machining operations and implement appropriate process controls to ensure consistent quality and capability.
Drive continuous improvement in safety, quality, and productivity across all machining and tooling activities.
Prepare, complete, and maintain all PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) quality launch documentation to support successful product and process approvals.
Apply engineering principles and analytical techniques to establish robust manufacturing processes and continuously improve existing products and operations.
Develop and execute action plans to investigate, prioritize, and resolve open issues related to machining processes, tooling, and supplier performance.
Verify and validate corrective actions on internal processes and supplier processes to ensure sustained improvements and process stability.
Plan and conduct process audits to ensure process discipline and compliance with Powertrain guidelines and internal standards.
Create detailed process sheets and instruction sheets that clearly describe quality methods, work instructions, and process parameters for machining operations.
Deliver capable, stable, and repeatable processes and tools for all gear machining operations, including gear and blade grinding.
Lead variability reduction initiatives to minimize process variation and improve consistency in machining outputs.
Champion lean manufacturing initiatives and best practices to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and improve throughput.
Ensure compliance with plant, corporate, governmental, and environmental standards in all machining and tooling activities.
Support and maintain ISO compliance, including participation in internal ISO audits and related compliance activities.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate tooling design, machining equipment, and CNC machines into a cohesive, high-performing production system.
Program and support the use of tool presetters (such as Royal and Zoller systems) to ensure accurate tool setup and measurement.
Provide leadership within the manufacturing engineering function by demonstrating strong interpersonal, team-building, and communication skills.
Work Environment
The role operates in a high-production manufacturing environment focused on machining and tooling for gear and blade operations. The engineer works on the plant floor and in an engineering office setting, interacting frequently with machining equipment, CNC machines, and tooling systems. The environment includes the use of tool presetters such as Royal and Zoller, as well as advanced machining and grinding equipment. Work involves close collaboration with headquarters launch teams, suppliers, and cross-functional plant personnel to support a major machining line launch. The position emphasizes adherence to plant, corporate, governmental, environmental, and ISO standards, with regular participation in process audits and continuous improvement activities. The work schedule typically follows standard manufacturing hours, with flexibility required during launch phases and critical project milestones to support successful implementation and stabilization of new processes.
