Administrative Director Spiritual Care
Position Summary
At Stony Brook Medicine, the Administrative Director of Spiritual Care is a vital member of our team, responsible for the strategic, operational, and administrative leadership of Spiritual Care services. This role ensures the delivery of timely, compassionate, culturally sensitive, and patient- and family-centered spiritual support aligned with the hospital's mission, ICARE values, and strategic goals. The Administrator leads program development, performance, and team oversight while ensuring integration of spiritual care and bereavement support into the broader care continuum. This position requires experience in healthcare or community program settings, multidisciplinary collaboration, knowledge of culturally sensitive practices and program development.
Duties of an Administrative Director of Spiritual Care may include the following but are not limited to:
Provide Administrative oversight of Spiritual Care and Bereavement Services
Develop, plan, and implement policies, procedures, for spiritual care and bereavement programs
Oversee departmental budget, staffing, and resource allocation
Ensure timely response to spiritual care consults and requests across settings
Establish workflows to support efficient access to services, including crisis response and end-of-life care
Oversee bereavement support groups including follow-up programs for families
Monitor program performance metrics
Identify and implement opportunities to improve access, responsiveness, and patient/family experience
Recruit, onboard, develop, supervise, and evaluate staff, including chaplains and volunteers
Align spiritual care and bereavement services with hospital strategic initiatives, patient experience priorities, and quality goals
Collaborate with clinical leaders, nursing, social work, palliative care, and patient experience teams to integrate spiritual and bereavement support into care plans
Participate in hospital committees (e.g., Ethics, Patient Experience, Schwartz Rounds)
Foster strong relationships across departments to ensure a coordinated, team-based approach
Partner with community organizations and faith-based groups as appropriate
Ensure documentation of spiritual care and bereavement services meets regulatory and accreditation standards
Maintain compliance with organizational policies and procedures
Promote awareness of spiritual care and bereavement services among clinical teams, employee orientation, nursing education and other events
Support staff well-being initiatives and resilience programs in collaboration with organizational leadership
Encourage ongoing professional development for team members
Oversee spiritual care programming, including interfaith services, rituals, and supportive counseling services
Ensure services are inclusive and responsive to diverse cultural and spiritual needs
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Psychology, Theology, Social Work, Public Health, or related field
Minimum of 3 years of leadership experience in healthcare, patient experience, community program settings or related services
Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary teams in healthcare/community settings
Demonstrated experience developing and implementing support programs to meet needs of patients/community
Excellent communication skills, leadership, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively across diverse populations and cultural backgrounds, implement culturally sensitive care
Community Program Outreach, Spiritual Care or Bereavement Experience
Strong organizational skills.
Compassionate, Empathetic, Professional
Crisis Intervention Experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Masters Degree in healthcare administration, spiritual care, bereavement, counseling
Pastoral Care certification
4 units Clinical Pastoral Education training
ADEC Association for Death Education and Counseling

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position is - $110282 - $132131 / year.
The above salary range represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate's validated years of comparable experience. Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.
