Job Title: Construction Equipment Technician
Job Description
This role is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing a wide range of heavy-duty construction equipment, including loaders, bulldozers, excavators, graders, backhoes, and other diesel- and hydraulic-powered machinery. The technician ensures that all equipment remains safe, reliable, and operating at peak performance to support efficient and continuous operations. The position is based in San Jose, CA and follows a Monday through Friday schedule from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with some local travel required to support additional locations.
Responsibilities
Inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair heavy construction equipment such as loaders, bulldozers, excavators, graders, backhoes, and other diesel- and hydraulic-powered machinery to ensure safe and reliable operation.
Use OEM diagnostic equipment and software programs to troubleshoot issues and identify root causes of failures across multiple heavy construction equipment brands, including Caterpillar, John Deere, and Volvo.
Independently perform all aspects of preventive maintenance and heavy repairs on OEM heavy construction equipment, including reconditioning, repair, and assembly of equipment as assigned.
Provide mobile, cross-functional maintenance and repair support to additional locations as needed, including traveling locally to job sites or other facilities.
Analyze the reusability of parts, determine appropriate repair or replacement actions, order required parts, and track asset compliance percentages to maintain high equipment readiness.
Complete all repairs and maintenance tasks in a timely manner while maintaining high quality standards and minimizing equipment downtime.
Adhere to OSHA standards and all safety policies at all times, actively promoting a strong safety culture and setting a positive example for peers.
Maintain the assigned service truck in clean and safe working condition, including accountability for tools, diagnostic equipment, and parts inventory.
Read and interpret equipment manuals, schematics, and diagnostic information to support accurate troubleshooting and repairs.
Communicate effectively with equipment operators, supervisors, and team members to understand issues, explain findings, and coordinate repair activities.
Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to document work performed, record inspections, and track maintenance history.
Perform welding and fabrication tasks when needed to support equipment repair and modification, if qualified.
Work safely in physically demanding conditions, including lifting up to 75 pounds, working at heights, and operating on uneven ground during road calls.
Follow all company procedures for calibration, inspection, and maintenance supervision as they relate to heavy equipment operations.
Essential Skills
Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems, diesel engines, transmissions, and electrical systems used in heavy construction equipment.
Proficiency in inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing heavy construction equipment, including loaders, bulldozers, excavators, graders, and backhoes.
Ability to use OEM diagnostic equipment and software to troubleshoot and identify root causes of failures on heavy construction equipment from multiple manufacturers, including Caterpillar, John Deere, and Volvo.
Demonstrated experience in preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, mechanical repair, and inspection of diesel- and hydraulic-powered machinery.
Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, schematics, and diagnostic software outputs.
Strong problem-solving skills with close attention to detail and accuracy in diagnosis and repair.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively as part of a maintenance team.
Effective communication skills to interact with operators, supervisors, and other technicians.
Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to record and track maintenance activities.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in heavy construction equipment maintenance.
Valid driver's license.
Ability to physically push, pull, and lift objects up to 75 pounds and work on uneven ground and at heights.
Ability to work safely in environments with loud noise, temperature extremes, dust, fumes, chemicals, and strong odors.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Completion of a trade school or technical program in heavy equipment or diesel mechanics is preferred.
ASE or equivalent diesel or mechanic certification is desirable.
Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is a plus.
Welding and fabrication skills are preferred and beneficial for equipment repair and modification.
Experience with maintenance supervision, calibration, and oversight of repair activities is an advantage.
Proficiency in both English and Spanish is preferred.
Familiarity with inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair processes specific to heavy construction equipment and related systems.
Ability to consistently apply OSHA and internal safety policies in all maintenance activities.

The work is physically demanding and involves regular exposure to loud noise from trucks and heavy equipment, changing weather conditions, and both high and low temperatures while working indoors and outdoors. Technicians may work on uneven ground during road calls and at heights when servicing trucks or other equipment. The environment includes potential exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals, and strong odors, and the consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $55.00/hr.
