Summary The incumbent in this position will serve as a Motor Vehicle Operator and will be expected to operate gasoline, diesel, or electric powered wheeled vehicles to haul cargo and fuel, transport passengers, and/or tow or recover equipment. This position will operate within VISN 22 Medical Centers and will be assigned to work within the Engineering Service, Facilities Management Service, or the Health Administration Service. Responsibilities Perform driving duties and related services operating various @types and classes of motor vehicles including buses, trucks, vans, patient transport vehicles such as ambulances and wheelchair buses, passenger and shuttle vans. MVO will operate and provide preventative maintenance checks and services for all vehicles operated on (e.g. monitoring fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure and hose connections, and washing the vehicle). Incumbent is required to operate a variety of passenger buses on scheduled or special runs from one location to another. Required to maneuver the bus around sharp corners and through narrow streets and roadways; and operate passenger ambulance buses which are equipped with litter facilities and other medical support equipment. Handle conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately. MVO will conduct safety checks for all vehicles before operating them. Operate passenger buses or passenger ambulance buses regardless of gross vehicle weight, the typical vehicle the MVO is required to operate will have an approximate gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more than 26,001 pounds and up to 32,000 pounds and most vehicles are equipped with air brakes. Drive and operate vehicles including buses with a 10-48 passenger capacity. Operate vehicles that are equipped with power lifts that are Americans with Disability Act (ADA) approved; the MVO is required to operate to ensure safe loading and unloading of non-ambulatory passengers. Required to maneuver vehicles operated in and out of constricted areas including narrow city streets and congested parking lots which includes navigating around sharp corners. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Moderate physical effort is required in the frequent handling of objects weighing (or requiring the force of) 25 to 50 pounds or more. The MVO shall wear appropriate personal protective equipment including weight belts, utilize proper loading equipment, and employ recommended lifting techniques to prevent injury and/or damage to property, including bending at knees to lift, pushing (not pulling) carts or other equipment, and follow all established safety standards. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
