Description
The Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo is seeking a dependable and skilled Court Utility / Maintenance Worker to support daily court operations through general maintenance, repair, custodial coverage, and logistical services. This position performs a wide range of semi-skilled and skilled tasks essential to maintaining well cared for and professional court facilities.

The Court Utility / Maintenance Worker performs a broad range of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, custodial, and logistical services in support of court facilities. Incumbents work independently on routine assignments and under general supervision on complex or unusual tasks, exercising sound judgment and professionalism in an active court environment.
The work differs from higher-level trades classifications in that the work is generalist in nature and does not require journeyman-level certification. It differs from custodial-only classifications by requiring maintenance, repair, carpentry, and equipment support skills.
Examples Of Duties
Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Perform painting, furniture repair, minor carpentry, and wood restoration
Repair and replace window coverings, fixtures, and building hardware
Conduct basic appliance, equipment, and minor electrical repairs
Perform minor workstation upgrades and repairs
Assemble, move, and reconfigure furniture and equipment
Provide occasional custodial coverage on an as-needed basis, not as a primary function of the classification, including restrooms, offices, and public areas
Deliver paper, supplies, furniture, and water gallons throughout court facilities
Stock, inventory, and assist with ordering supplies and materials
Assist departments, court staff, and operations as required
Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and light equipment
Follow established safety procedures and court protocols
Perform other facilities related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
General building maintenance and repair practices
Painting materials, techniques, and surface preparation
Basic carpentry and furniture repair
Safe use and care of tools and equipment
Workplace safety standards and procedures
Ability to:
Perform physical labor safely, including lifting, moving, and standing for extended periods
Read and follow work orders, instructions, and safety guidelines
Work independently and prioritize multiple tasks
Communicate effectively and professionally with court staff and the public
Maintain discretion and professionalism in a court environment
Experience:
One (1) to three (3) years of experience in facilities maintenance, building maintenance, custodial services, or a related field
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
Possession of a valid California Driver's License may be required
Special Conditions
Work may involve physical exertion, including lifting 50 pounds or less.
Position is Non-Exempt (FLSA)

Open & Promotional. Anyone may apply. Current employees of the Superior Court of California in the County of San Mateo with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in classified regular, probationary, extra-help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score.
The examination process will consist of an application screening (pass/fail) based on the candidate's application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%).
Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations, or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California, and applicants must participate at their own expense.
