DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Houston Water is a team of approximately 1,500 drinking water and wastewater professionals, including but not limited to operators, mechanics, engineers, scientists, planners, regulatory and business personnel. The City of Houston Water and Wastewater Utility is a regulated public health agency governed by federal and state laws.
RC - Wastewater is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Environmental Investigator II. The selected candidate must meet all aspects of the Environmental Investigator II classification established by the City of Houston. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Perform technical investigative and reporting work relative to the regulatory compliance aspects of a wastewater
collection system.
Support other RC staff with review of records in the Work Management System and verify accuracy of data entered daily
by various wastewater operations staff.
Conduct post-spill water quality monitoring and other environmental impact assessments related to unauthorized
discharges from the wastewater collection system.
Conduct field tests to assist operations teams in diagnosing water and wastewater issues.
Assist with preparation of reports to meet consent decree and other regulatory reporting requirements and deadlines.
Assist with special projects including but not limited to investigation of inflow and infiltration (I&I) sources. Prepare
observation reports, document investigation findings, and conduct follow-up investigations, education, and/or
enforcement as required.
Working Conditions
The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and occasionally requires long periods of walking on rough surfaces. There are occasional exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture, air pollution, and raw sewage. This position may involve infrequent exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises, and minor burns.
This is a Department of Public Works & Engineering Emergency Management position at the Tier II Level.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Health Engineering or a closely related degree
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One year of pollution/environmental control experience is required.

PREFERENCES
Preference will be given to applicants who are bilingual or speak multiple languages, with knowledge of water distribution and investigative experience. Applicants with a valid driver's license and compliance with the city of Houston's policy on driving. is highly desired
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
