Job Title: Construction Materials Testing Technician
Job Description
This role provides field and laboratory support for infrastructure and building construction projects by performing construction materials testing and inspection on concrete, soils, steel, asphalt, and aggregates. You will travel to local job sites, ensure materials meet project specifications and industry standards, and contribute to the quality and safety of projects such as water and wastewater plants, tunnels, levees, dams, and buildings. The position is open to both entry-level candidates with relevant education or construction-related experience and experienced technicians, with opportunities available in the Dayton, Columbus, and greater Cincinnati areas.
Responsibilities
Perform field testing and inspection of construction materials, including concrete (such as slump, air content, and compression samples), soils (such as compaction and density testing), asphalt, aggregates, reinforcing steel, and other related materials.
Document and report all test results accurately, clearly, and in a timely manner using established forms and procedures.
Ensure all testing and inspection work complies with project specifications, ASTM and AASHTO standards, and applicable safety requirements.
Communicate effectively with contractors, project managers, and engineers in the field to relay test results, discuss issues, and coordinate work activities.
Transport and handle testing equipment safely to and from job sites using a company-provided vehicle.
Support quality control and quality assurance (QA/QC) efforts on active construction projects by monitoring material performance and reporting nonconformances.
Assist with laboratory testing of construction materials when needed, following established test methods and lab procedures.
Travel to job sites as required, primarily within the local region, with occasional overnight trips when project needs arise.
Maintain testing equipment and tools in good working condition and report any issues that may affect test accuracy or safety.
Follow all company and site-specific safety policies and procedures while working in the field and laboratory.
Essential Skills
High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid driver's license with the ability to travel regularly to job sites.
Relevant degree in geology, earth science, construction, or a related field, or relevant construction or outdoor work experience.
Willingness to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions.
Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with contractors, project managers, and engineers and for documenting test results.
Ability to perform construction materials testing and inspection on concrete, soils, steel, and aggregates, or a strong willingness to learn these skills.
Familiarity with or ability to learn ASTM and AASHTO testing standards and procedures.
Ability to safely operate and transport testing equipment, including potentially using a nuclear density gauge in the field.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate data collection and reporting.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Prior construction materials testing and inspection experience with concrete, soil, steel, and aggregates.
ACI certification (American Concrete Institute) in concrete testing or other relevant construction materials testing certifications.
Experience using a nuclear density gauge for soil compaction and density testing.
Experience in construction, field inspection, or related trades.
Experience working on infrastructure projects such as water and wastewater plants, tunnels, levees, dams, or buildings.
Interest in obtaining additional industry certifications, with training and support available for entry-level candidates.
Ability to manage time effectively during busy seasons and adapt to varying workloads throughout the year.
Work Environment
Work is primarily performed in the field at active construction sites, with frequent travel to local projects and occasional overnight trips as needed. Technicians work outdoors in all weather conditions year-round, including heat, cold, rain, and snow, and may occasionally work in a laboratory setting to complete additional testing. The typical workload ranges from approximately 40 to 55 hours per week during warmer months, with hours potentially reduced during slower periods while maintaining a steady flow of work due to a strong backlog of projects and long-term clients. A company vehicle is provided for transporting testing equipment to job sites. The environment is hands-on, safety-focused, and supportive of training, with opportunities for entry-level candidates to gain certifications and grow their careers in construction materials testing.
