Job Description
The Mechanical Designer provides customers with outstanding value, service, and product quality by supporting a comprehensive system for managing designs and drawings in a manufacturing environment. This role develops, deploys, monitors, evaluates, and documents designs and related processes while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to ensure new products and processes transition smoothly from concept to production. The position offers an excellent opportunity to grow and refine SolidWorks design skills, particularly in working with drawings and redlining design documentation.
Responsibilities
Support and maintain a comprehensive system for managing mechanical designs and drawings, including associated equipment, tools, suppliers, files, and programs.
Develop, deploy, monitor, evaluate, and document design-related processes to ensure consistency, accuracy, and efficiency.
Collaborate with sales, manufacturing, purchasing, quality control, and department personnel to ensure processes and systems meet or exceed production quality, value, and service expectations.
Maintain tooling, fixtures, and equipment according to scheduled service requirements and directives from engineering leadership.
Support documentation activities such as data collection, travelers, pick sheets, work-in-process (WIP) records, product performance charts, and product yield information.
Work with engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, quality control, sales, and other project members to transfer new products or processes effectively and efficiently from concept into production.
Identify tooling and equipment needs and provide well-supported recommendations for purchase or modification to engineering leadership.
Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, quality control, purchasing, sales, and cell personnel to integrate new or modified equipment, tooling, processes, procedures, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and safety requirements into manufacturing.
Assist in providing training to relevant personnel on new or updated equipment, tooling, processes, procedures, SOPs, and safety requirements.
Generate reports and charts to communicate design, process, and performance information clearly and accurately.
Form and maintain spreadsheets for data entry and perform data analysis using statistical methodologies.
Communicate progress on individual assignments and projects to engineering leadership, including updates on departmental and individual goals and any departmental issues.
Apply mechanical design principles and CAD tools, including SolidWorks and AutoCAD, to create, revise, and redline drawings and design documents.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by applying lean manufacturing and lean six sigma concepts where appropriate.
Essential Skills
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME).
At least one year of experience as a co-op student or intern in a manufacturing or design environment.
Experience and knowledge in the use of SolidWorks.
Experience and knowledge in the use of AutoCAD.
Mechanical engineering and mechanical design skills, including new product development.
Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting.
Ability to use algebra and trigonometry in design and analysis work.
Ability to form spreadsheets for data entry and perform data analysis using statistical methodologies.
Ability to generate clear and accurate reports and charts.
Strong mechanical aptitude with a history of hands-on experience.
Effective communication skills with the ability to interact with all levels of the organization.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with lean manufacturing concepts.
Exposure to or knowledge of lean six sigma methodologies.
Interest in developing and refining SolidWorks design skills, especially around drawings and redlining design documents.
Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams including engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, quality control, sales, and production personnel.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to product quality, value, and customer service.
Work Environment
This role is based in an optics manufacturing facility located in Hopewell Junction, NY, operating on a first-shift schedule. The position begins fully onsite to support hands-on learning, collaboration, and integration with production and engineering teams, and will transition to a hybrid work arrangement over time. The environment involves close interaction with manufacturing operations, engineering teams, and quality functions, using tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, spreadsheets, and statistical analysis software. The dress code is casual, reflecting a comfortable yet professional atmosphere focused on collaboration, continuous improvement, and high-quality production.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $26.44 - $28.85/hr.
