Are you a nursing student graduating in 12 months or less (Junior or Senior students)? Are you ready to gain hands-on experience in a clinical setting before you graduate? Look no further than Banner Health's new Nurse Extern program!

Under the supervision of an RN preceptor, our nurse externs will have the chance to practice various skills, including: assessing patients, administering medications, adjusting IV pump rates or devices, parenteral fluids, blood products or IV flushes, initiating, titrating and discontinuing oxygen, and performing basic data collection in an EMR. In addition, our nurse externs will have the chance to practice any skill for which they have received didactic and clinical instruction for an can provide evidence of a skill checklist from an accredited nursing program. Throughout the program, our nursing externs are also able to spend time with the clinical case manager, observe procedures, or participate in other activities relevant to the patient population with which they are involved.

We are currently looking for Nurse Externs to join our team at Banner Churchill Community Hospital in Fallon, Nevada. Shifts can be days or nights with a minimum of 1 shift per month/12 hours per month. More shifts may be offered depending on department needs. This extern will work alongside an RN in various departments which can be MedSurg, ICU, ED, L&D and Surgery!

Located in Fallon, Nev., Banner Churchill Community Hospital is a 25-bed licensed hospital offering the most comprehensive array of medical services in rural northern Nevada. We provide comprehensive and emergency care, including an ambulance service that covers more than 5,900 square miles. This makes us one of only two hospital-operated paramedic/EMT/EMS providers in northern Nevada. POSITION SUMMARY

This position, under the direct supervision of an RN, will allow the nursing student / new graduate nurse the ability to expand their clinical experience while working through standard RN competency assessments on a wide variety of patient care activities, which include classroom training, participation in patient care planning, implementation, observation and evaluation, as well as reporting significant observations to the RN.

CORE FUNCTIONS

Assists direct caregiver in the assessment, planning, diagnosis, implementation, evaluation and nursing care and reports patient status to a professional registered nurse.

Participates with other disciplines in the planning, implementation, evaluation and modification of nursing care and provides direct nursing care under the direct supervisor of a licensed professional registered nurse.

Performs nursing procedures for which competency has been established under the direct supervision of a licensed professional registered nurse.

The unlicensed Nurse Extern must have received didactic and clinical instruction in IV therapy to participate in aspects of IV therapy. Unlicensed Nurse Externs may participate in the provision of the following aspects of IV therapy including peripheral-short IV insertion with the use of saline flushes, changing IV dressings and discontinuation of peripheral-short IV's under the direct observation and supervision of an RN.

The unlicensed Nurse Extern, under the direct supervision of an RN, may perform other nursing skills for which they have received didactic and clinical instruction in their program including oxygen therapy

The licensed Nurse Extern may participate in nursing activities and procedures as allowed by the practice and scope of the nursing license held while pending transfer to the RN role

Follows safety standards in all aspects of performance of the above functions, reports/removes equipment and attends safety education sessions.

Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Provides all customers of Banner Health with an excellent service experience by consistently demonstrating our core and leader behaviors each and every day.

Interacts with all levels of staff in a variety of departments, physicians, patients, families and external contacts, such as employees of other health care institutions, community providers and agencies, concerning the health care of the patient. Scope of responsibility is defined by the Nursing Extern's preceptor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be enrolled in an accredited nursing program and must be within 1 year of graduation. Demonstrates behaviors, which are consistent with Banner Core Behaviors.

Must be able to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills and analyze complex data.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
