The Superintendent of Construction supervises and coordinates all on-site activities for heavy civil and marine construction projects. This role requires extensive construction management experience, strong field leadership, and a proven commitment to safety, quality, and schedule. The Superintendent plans and directs field operations, coordinates materials, subcontractors, personnel, and equipment, and ensures that all work meets company standards for safety, environmental compliance, quality, budget, and customer satisfaction. Projects include a wide range of marine and heavy civil work such as pile driving, deep foundations, wharfs, piers, bulkheads, bridges, dredging, concrete, heavy lifts, and cable laying.
Responsibilities
Supervise and coordinate all field construction activities to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of work.
Provide day-to-day supervisory direction to craft workers and foremen, including organizing and scheduling the workforce, assigning tasks, overseeing performance, and following up on completed work.
Manage field productivity, safety, quality, and adherence to project schedule for each assignment.
Serve as the primary liaison between field engineering, estimating, and craft teams to ensure construction work complies with drawings, specifications, and project requirements.
Work closely with the project team to develop, update, and maintain detailed project schedules.
Assist the project team in developing Project Plans, Work Element Plans, and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs).
Develop and implement checklists for inspections, audits, emergency response, and other critical field processes.
Instruct and train employees, subcontractors, and other personnel in safe and efficient construction methods.
Implement and supervise quality control standards for each field operation to ensure work meets or exceeds project specifications.
Coordinate, allocate, and maintain construction equipment required for the project, ensuring proper use and upkeep.
Collaborate with the project team, clients, inspectors, and other stakeholders to identify issues, isolate problems, and assist in developing effective solutions.
Execute all field operations in compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local environmental rules and regulations.
Promote and enforce safe work standards and support an Incident and Injury Free (IIF) work environment as a condition of employment.
Uphold and model high ethical standards, encourage ethical behavior in others, and actively seek appropriate resolution to potential ethical conflicts.
Directly supervise craft employees on the construction site, performing supervisory responsibilities in accordance with company policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
Participate in interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning, and directing work for field personnel.
Conduct performance appraisals, provide feedback, and recommend rewards or disciplinary actions as appropriate.
Address employee concerns and complaints in a timely and professional manner and work to resolve problems effectively.
Direct best work practices in conjunction with the Project Manager and/or Operations Manager to ensure consistent, high-quality field execution.
Oversee subcontractor performance, including coordination, safety, productivity, and adherence to contract requirements.
Ensure general contractor and subcontractor management practices support project goals for safety, quality, schedule, and budget.
Essential Skills
Minimum of 10 years of construction experience, including recent experience as a construction superintendent, ideally within heavy civil or marine construction.
Hands-on field experience and supervisory experience in a specific construction discipline such as marine construction, structures, heavy lifts, or concrete.
B.S. degree in a technical field, typically Civil Engineering or Construction Management, and/or 5-10 years of heavy civil field construction supervision experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of 3 years of experience in a foreperson or superintendent role as a Carpenter, Pile Driver, Operator, or Laborer.
Proven ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications accurately.
Strong knowledge of construction and engineering principles and practices, particularly in heavy civil and marine environments.
Demonstrated experience leading and managing crews of craft workers on active construction sites.
Knowledge and understanding of local union or prevailing wage rules and how they apply to field operations.
Strong leadership skills with the ability to organize, schedule, and direct a diverse field workforce.
Commitment to safe work practices and the ability to promote and enforce safety standards on site.
Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and SharePoint.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a field environment while maintaining focus on safety, quality, and schedule.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective interaction with project teams, clients, inspectors, and field personnel.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience overseeing all @types of marine construction, including pile driving, deep foundations, wharfs, piers, bulkheads, bridges, dredging, concrete, heavy lifts, and cable laying.
Experience working with general contractors and managing subcontractors on complex construction projects.
Familiarity with scheduling, estimating, computer-aided design (CAD), and project management software.
First Aid/CPR certification (preferred).
OSHA certification, such as OSHA 30 (preferred).
Fall Protection Competent Person certification (preferred).
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement Project Plans, Work Element Plans, JSAs, and field checklists.
Experience implementing and maintaining quality control programs in a field construction environment.
Ability to collaborate effectively with project managers, operations managers, engineers, and field staff to align field execution with project goals.
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues in the field and help develop practical, timely solutions.
High level of personal integrity and a strong commitment to ethical conduct in all aspects of the job.
Experience in an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) environment or interest in long-term ownership opportunities, including eligibility for annual stock payouts and bonus programs.
Work Environment
This role is primarily field-based, with over 75% of the time spent working outside on job sites and around construction equipment, and less than 25% of the time spent at a desk. Projects are heavy civil and marine in nature, often requiring extended periods on site for months at a time depending on project location and requirements. The position involves regular travel and potential temporary relocation to project sites. When not assigned to a project site, the Superintendent works in an office setting based in Jacksonville, FL. The work environment includes exposure to varying weather conditions, active construction operations, and marine or waterfront conditions where applicable. Field work must comply with all applicable safety and environmental regulations, and the role requires consistent adherence to company safety policies and procedures. The position uses standard office technology such as Microsoft Office Suite and may involve scheduling, estimating, CAD, and project management software. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $130000.00 - $190000.00/yr.
