Job Title: Mechanical Control System Engineer (Dynamic Modeling)
Job Description
The Mechanical Control Systems Engineer is responsible for developing and validating advanced system-level controls through dynamic modeling and simulation. This role requires deep expertise in dynamic systems, control theory, and transient system behavior to support upstream development of complex engineered systems. The engineer will design, develop, and validate high-fidelity dynamic plant and control models using tools such as Simulink, with a strong emphasis on control system robustness, stability, and performance. The position focuses on virtual integration, transient response analysis, and requirements development rather than physical lab testing. This role owns the development of Hardware in the Loop (HIL) environments used to simulate real-world and edge-case conditions, ensuring control strategies perform correctly under dynamic operating scenarios. The engineer will define and decompose system-level software and controls requirements, ensuring they are rooted in sound control theory principles and aligned to dynamic system performance objectives.
Responsibilities
Develop high-fidelity dynamic models of plant systems and control algorithms with emphasis on transient and nonlinear behavior.
Apply control theory principles (stability, feedback control, state-space modeling, frequency response) to system design and validation.
Create, maintain, and execute Hardware in the Loop (HIL) simulation environments.
Analyze system performance under transient, steady-state, and edge-case conditions.
Define and write system-level controls and software requirements based on dynamic system behavior.
Decompose system requirements into component-level specifications (sensors, actuators, sampling rates, tolerances).
Perform compliance analysis against dynamic performance and stability requirements.
Distribute validated models, requirements, and findings to software, controls, and hardware teams.
Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure alignment between control strategies, software implementation, and system performance.
Continuously improve modeling accuracy, simulation fidelity, and control system robustness.
Essential Skills
Advanced proficiency in Simulink for dynamic systems modeling and control design.
Strong experience in control systems engineering and dynamic systems modeling.
Deep understanding of control theory (PID, state-space, stability analysis, frequency domain methods).
Experience with transient system analysis and dynamic response modeling.
Experience developing and executing Hardware in the Loop (HIL) simulations.
Ability to translate dynamic system behavior into actionable software and control requirements.
Strong analytical, mathematical, and systems thinking skills.
Ability to work cross-functionally with software, mechanical, and electrical engineering teams.
Strong technical documentation and communication skills.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Control Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Systems Engineering.
Strong academic foundation in control theory, dynamic systems, or related disciplines preferred.
Experience with advanced modeling techniques, simulation-based validation, or digital twin environments.
Familiarity with aerospace or highly regulated engineering environments is a plus.
Work Environment
The work environment emphasizes virtual integration, utilizing advanced technologies and tools such as Simulink for dynamic modeling and Hardware in the Loop (HIL) simulation. The focus is on ensuring robust, stable, and high-performance control systems through dynamic analysis and simulation, rather than physical lab testing. Collaboration across software, mechanical, and electrical engineering teams is essential, with a commitment to improving modeling accuracy and control system robustness.
