The Assistant Executive Director serves as the Chief Operations Officer (COO) for the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and is responsible for leading and managing board operations in order to carry out its statutory mission to protect the public's safety through the regulation of peace officer education, licensing and officer conduct. The incumbent works directly with the Executive Director to implement board directives and strategic changes to ensure the agency functions effectively as the police profession, public expectations, technology and other factors evolve.
This position has responsibility for oversight and daily management of the agency's regulatory and licensing functions. This includes annual police agency compliance reviews, the complaint and licensing disciplinary process, the pre-service education and continuing education program as well as the annual training reimbursement program. Additionally, the incumbent coordinates data practices, state-wide policy updates and development as well as completion of performance reviews for 12+ staff members.
The Assistant Executive Director provides leadership and works collaboratively with the Executive Director to achieve agency goals and objectives. The incumbent is accountable to the Executive Director and the board for the operations of the entire agency, including its programs, its people and the behavior and performance of the organization.
This position is eligible for a hybrid telework arrangement. With a telework agreement, onsite attendance will be required a minimum of four (4) days per week or as requested by management to meet business needs. Minimum Qualifications

Four (4) years of experience that includes the following:
Experience in managing team members which include delegating or assigning responsibilities, providing developmental opportunities to team members, engaging in performance-based conversations, and holding team members accountable for their work product and meeting established goals.
Work experience with a law enforcement agency as a licensed or certified police officer with no disciplinary action taken against the license or certification by the appropriate regulatory agency.
A degree in criminal justice, public administration, business administration, or a related field may substitute for experience as follows:
Associate degree = 6 months of experience
Bachelor's degree = 12 months of experience
Master's degree = 18 months of experience
Minimum qualifications assessed at interview:
Ability to negotiate and resolve disputes via a sound problem solving strategy
Demonstrated project management skills
Strong communications skills and the experience communicating with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and perspectives
Effective interpersonal skills requiring tact, diplomacy, discretion and confidentiality to influence others and/or compel change throughout an organization
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in criminal justice, public administration, business administration or a related field
Budget and fiscal experience
Supervisory or lead worker experience within a unionized environment
Experience planning, implementing, and managing technology projects
Experience in a state licensing or regulatory agency and/or demonstrated understanding of the Minnesota POST Board's roles and responsibilities
Three (3) years of experience leading an agency or organization
Physical Requirements
Regularly uses phone and office equipment; handles paper and electronic records
Regularly uses computer for extended time periods
Lifts 10-25 pounds at times
