Role Overview:
An IOSHA Industrial Hygienist is a health Compliance Safety and Health Officer (CSHO) whose role is to help improve worker safety in Indiana. To achieve this goal, part of the CSHOs duties are to conduct compliance inspections, which includes visually inspecting the assigned worksite, performing air and noise sampling to identify exposures to air contaminant hazards in the workplace, interviewing employees and management, reviewing documentation, identifying hazardous conditions, and writing reports. As needed, health CSHOs will also conduct some inspections based upon safety-based hazards in the workplace, sometimes assisting IOSHA safety CSHOs. Depending upon the needs of the department, some CSHOs work from the Indiana Government Center South (IGCS), and some work from remote locations throughout the state depending on their proximity to the IGCS.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $67,314.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
Conduct on-site consultations to ensure businesses are in compliance with IOSHA safety standards.
Analyze program administration and standard operations to determine compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations.
Educate employers, employees, and the public on IOSHA standards.
Provide training to employers, employees, and the general public on how to recognize hazards and ensure corrective measures are taken.
Assist employers, employees, and the general public on the development of workplace safety and health programs.
Prepare technical reports on training provided.
Complete detailed reports on consultations performed.
Complete accurate and timely records and reports related to travel, work schedule and work activities.
Collaborate with INSafe and IOSHA peers, as well as contacts within the U.S. Department of Labor to stay abreast of current trends, training and changes in safety and health laws.
Essential functions of this position require travel on most workdays to inspect, audit, examine, survey, or investigate clients, customers, or other regulated entities and write reports at those sites or employee's home. Employee reports to the agency's office for occasional meetings or events. Number and timing of work hours may vary daily or weekly to accommodate operational needs and staffing concerns at the client's or customer's worksite, minimize expenditures for repeated visits to complete the work, and allocate resources to complete assigned work effectively.
This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

What You'll Need for Success:
Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:
Thorough knowledge of and the ability to appropriately apply Federal and State laws and regulations pertaining to occupational health standards.
Exceptional verbal, written and presentation skills; knowledge of effective training and educational methods and techniques.
Ability to manage difficult situations.
Strong computer skills and accurate data entry; proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
Be willing to travel with reasonable accommodation.
A degree is not required.
