Job Title: Electrical and Instrumentation DesignerJob Description
The Electrical and Instrumentation Designer will develop basic and detailed designs for low and medium voltage electrical systems in process plants, with a strong focus on industrial, chemical, and gas plant facilities. This role produces high-quality 2D CAD deliverables, supports integration of electrical and instrumentation systems with 3D models, and collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams and external partners. The position offers the opportunity to work with advanced technologies in a growing organization that designs plants producing oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and other gases used in high-tech and industrial applications.
Responsibilities
Develop basic and detailed designs for low and medium voltage electrical systems for process plants, including industrial, chemical, and gas plant facilities.
Produce detailed 2D CAD drawings for LV and MV systems, including single line diagrams for medium voltage switchgear and low voltage motor control centers (MCCs).
Create panelboard distribution diagrams, MV schematic diagrams, relay interface panel drawings, and other related electrical schematics.
Prepare cable and conduit schedules, cable tray bills of materials (BOMs), plans, and section views, ensuring accuracy and constructability.
Develop grounding plans and grounding detail drawings to support safe and compliant installations.
Produce electrical heat tracing drawings that clearly define routing, power supply, and control requirements.
Create instrumentation deliverables such as instrument location drawings, I/O panel wiring and layout diagrams, I/O panel power distribution drawings, analyzer panel layout drawings, and analyzer tubing schematics.
Generate elementary diagrams, instrument wiring diagrams, DCS panel designs, instrument installation details, and installation specifications.
Review vendor drawings and integrate vendor electrical requirements into project electrical drawings and documentation.
Review subcontractors' electrical designs, wiring drawings, and RFIs to verify compliance with design codes, datasheets, and project specifications.
Perform technical reviews of vendor quotations to confirm alignment with project electrical and instrumentation requirements.
Coordinate design activities with other engineering disciplines, internal departments, and external agencies to ensure fully integrated solutions.
Interpret and apply relevant electrical codes and standards throughout the design process.
Use AutoCAD or BricsCAD and 3D modeling tools to integrate electrical designs with plant models and P&IDs.
Read and interpret 2D and 3D Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) to develop accurate power distribution and instrumentation control designs.
Adhere to all safety rules and regulations, attend required safety trainings, and actively participate in safety programs.
Work with minimal supervision while reporting progress and issues to electrical engineering leadership as needed.
Contribute to proposals and conceptual designs that leverage advanced technology and sound engineering principles.
Manage multiple tasks and deliverables concurrently, taking ownership of assigned work and seeking additional responsibilities as capacity allows.
Essential Skills
Minimum 5 years of relevant electrical design experience in industrial, chemical, or gas plant environments.
Proven experience producing 2D CAD drawings for electrical and instrumentation systems, including single line diagrams, panelboard distribution diagrams, MV schematics, and relay interface panels.
Strong skills in developing cable and conduit schedules, cable tray BOMs, plans, and section views.
Demonstrated ability to create grounding plans and grounding detail drawings.
Experience producing electrical heat tracing drawings and related documentation.
Proficiency in developing instrument location drawings, I/O panel wiring and layout diagrams, and I/O panel power distribution drawings.
Experience creating analyzer panel layout drawings and analyzer tubing schematics.
Hands-on experience with low voltage and medium voltage electrical systems, power distribution, and switchgear.
Strong understanding of instrumentation controls in process plant environments.
Well versed in the application and interpretation of Electrical Code requirements.
Proficiency with AutoCAD or BricsCAD for electrical and instrumentation design.
Familiarity working with 3D modeling tools and integrating electrical design with 3D plant models.
Ability to read and understand 2D and 3D Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high quality and accuracy.
Strong coordination and communication skills for working with other disciplines, departments, vendors, and subcontractors.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor's or Associate degree in a technical field.
Experience in industrial, chemical, and gas plant projects, including facilities producing oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and other specialty gases.
Background in designing electrical and instrumentation systems for applications that support high-tech industries, such as hydrogen fueling and other advanced gas technologies.
Experience reviewing vendor drawings, subcontractor designs, and RFIs for compliance with project requirements, design codes, datasheets, and specifications.
Experience performing technical reviews of vendor quotations against project requirements.
Comfort working in a fast-growing organization where responsibilities can expand and evolve.
Demonstrated ambition and initiative, with a desire to take on a wide range of tasks rather than limiting work to the minimum required.
