Job Title: Medical Assistant
Job Description
This Medical Assistant position supports an Internal Medicine clinic connected to a hospital, providing direct patient care and clinical support in a high-volume outpatient setting. You will work closely with providers and another Medical Assistant to ensure efficient patient flow, accurate documentation, and high-quality, compassionate care for patients seen in the clinic each month.
Responsibilities
Room patients efficiently by greeting them, verifying identity, escorting them to exam rooms, and preparing them for their visit with the provider.
Obtain and document vital signs including blood pressure, temperature, weight, and other indicators, and record signs and symptoms accurately in the electronic medical record.
Complete and update medical history documentation and other intake information to support accurate and thorough patient records.
Set up exam rooms and prepare necessary equipment and supplies for provider exams and procedures, ensuring a clean and organized environment.
Assist providers with a variety of clinical tasks and tests, including urinalyses, strep tests, flu tests, pregnancy tests, and other point-of-care tests as directed and appropriate to the specialty practice.
Schedule tests, radiology exams, and appointments with specialists as requested by providers, ensuring all relevant information is accurately entered into the electronic medical record.
Perform prior authorizations as needed and notify the appropriate referral specialist when an insurance referral is required.
Assist providers during office exams by collecting height, weight, body mass index (BMI), and other pertinent information and updating immunization records as needed.
Perform phone triage when scheduled, including addressing patient medical questions, communicating test results, processing medication refill requests, and completing call-backs to patients.
Fax, call, or electronically transmit prescription refills as directed by providers, ensuring accuracy and compliance with clinic procedures.
Support walk-in patient care by performing triage, taking blood pressures, conducting urinalyses, assisting with medication sample requests, and collecting relevant history and information to relay to the provider.
Function as a resource to visitors, providers, and staff by greeting everyone promptly and courteously, answering questions within scope, and directing individuals appropriately.
Communicate clearly and consistently support the mission and values of the organization in all interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.
Perform data entry and maintain accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record and other clinic systems.
Perform additional duties as assigned by clinic leadership or providers to support smooth clinic operations and patient care.
Conduct all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and organizational policies and procedures, including Blood and Body Substance Precautions and infection control guidelines.
Essential Skills
Active certification as a CMA (AAMA), RMA, or CCMA.
Successful completion and graduation from a recognized medical assistant training program or equivalent experience.
High school diploma or GED.
Demonstrated experience providing direct patient care in a clinical or medical assisting setting.
Proficiency in rooming patients, obtaining and documenting vital signs, and performing basic clinical tasks.
Ability to use electronic medical record (EMR) or electronic health record systems for documentation, scheduling, and data entry.
Experience with appointment scheduling and managing patient flow in an outpatient clinic.
Basic life support (BLS) certification or the ability to obtain it as required by the organization.
Skill in performing phlebotomy and blood draws, including use of a centrifuge when needed.
Ability to assist with and perform point-of-care tests such as urinalyses, strep tests, flu tests, and pregnancy tests.
Strong data entry skills with attention to accuracy and detail in clinical documentation.
Ability to stand for long periods of time during the workday.
An upbeat, positive, and outgoing attitude with a willingness to step in where needed to maintain consistent patient flow and positive patient interactions.
Strong communication skills to interact effectively with patients, providers, and team members in a fast-paced environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
2-3 years of experience working as a Certified Medical Assistant is preferred.
Experience in family practice, internal medicine, or women's health settings is highly desirable.
Prior experience with point-of-care (POC) testing in an outpatient clinic environment.
Experience working with electronic medical record systems in general.
Experience in hospital or clinic-based care, including familiarity with internal medicine or family medicine workflows.
Ability to provide friendly, patient-centered service and contribute to a supportive, team-based culture.
Interest in professional growth and development within a healthcare network, including potential advancement into other clinical or administrative roles.
Work Environment
This role is based in an Internal Medicine clinic within a hospital setting in Franklin, working closely with two providers and one other Medical Assistant as part of a collaborative, team-based care model. The clinic operates in a temperature-controlled environment with easy, free access to parking and no need for parking garages or navigating downtown traffic. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with walk-in patients seen from 8:00 a.m. to approximately 8:50 a.m., scheduled appointments from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., a one-hour lunch break, and afternoon appointments from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., followed by closing and finishing visits by 5:00 p.m. There is no weekend work and holidays are off, with only minimal overtime required. The clinic sees a steady patient volume and uses electronic medical record systems and standard clinical equipment such as blood pressure devices, thermometers, scales, and phlebotomy supplies including centrifuges. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.22 - $23.00/hr.
