Job Title: Test Engineer
Job Description
This role offers an opportunity for an experienced Test Engineer to work hands-on with vehicle transmission microcontrollers while developing and executing comprehensive test plans. You will apply mechanical, electrical, and software engineering principles to validate components, ensure they meet performance and regulatory standards, and support continuous product improvement.
Responsibilities
Apply engineering principles and analysis tools to develop detailed test plans and procedures for design parts and components within your area of specialty.
Design and define test specifications, standards, data settings, and test schedules to evaluate design feasibility and ensure components meet design acceptance criteria, performance targets, and applicable regulatory or internal standards.
Prepare and set up test equipment, including configuring instruments and fixtures, to conduct moderately complex tests on vehicle transmission microcontrollers and related components.
Perform hands-on work on vehicles, including disassembling and reassembling components as needed to access transmission microcontrollers using standard hand tools.
Conduct tests accurately and thoroughly, ensuring data integrity and adherence to established procedures and safety practices.
Document and summarize test results and conclusions in clear written reports, ensuring that testing accuracy and completeness are verified.
Analyze and interpret test data to predict performance and potential failure modes, providing required product and design data to stakeholders.
Identify issues discovered during testing, develop and propose countermeasures, and recommend design changes based on analysis of test results.
Communicate test results and technical findings clearly in written reports and formal presentations to engineering teams and other stakeholders.
Collaborate closely with a small, tight-knit engineering group to share insights, resolve technical issues, and support team objectives.
Evaluate the need for additional testing based on initial results and propose follow-up tests to ensure comprehensive validation.
Support long-term projects by contributing to continuous improvement of test methods, tools, and standards within the team.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering; 6 years of related experience may be substituted for the required degree.
Over 5 years of test engineering experience in required testing and confirmation activities within an area of specialty.
Strong foundation in electrical engineering or computer science principles relevant to testing electronic components and systems.
Proficiency with software development or scripting in C, C++, and Python for test-related applications, automation, or data analysis.
Basic mechanical ability to work on vehicles, including disassembling and reassembling components to access transmission microcontrollers using hand tools.
Experience preparing and executing test plans, test procedures, and test schedules for components and systems.
Demonstrated ability to set up, operate, and troubleshoot test equipment used for component and system validation.
Strong documentation skills, including the ability to produce clear, concise, and accurate test reports and technical summaries.
Experience analyzing and interpreting test results to predict performance and identify potential failure modes.
Electrical troubleshooting experience (0-3 years mentioned as a baseline) with the ability to diagnose issues in electronic systems.
Ability to identify issues during testing and develop practical countermeasures or recommendations for design changes.
Capability to communicate technical findings effectively in written form and through formal presentations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science is highly relevant to the role.
Experience working with vehicle systems and transmission microcontrollers is a strong advantage.
Familiarity with both mechanical and electrical aspects of automotive systems, including integration of hardware and software.
Comfort working in a small, collaborative engineering team with a strong sense of morale and shared goals.
Interest in long-term project work, including multi-month or multi-year assignments with opportunities to transition into other roles.
Moderate physical capability for activities such as bending, crouching, reaching, stooping, standing, and walking at a moderately strong level.
Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs at a very strong level and up to 50 lbs with limited experience.
Capability to push and pull equipment at a moderately strong level.
