Job Title: Construction InspectorJob Description
The Construction Inspector works onsite at active water and wastewater treatment plant projects, serving as the owner's representative in the field. This role provides comprehensive construction inspection services to ensure all work complies with approved plans, specifications, codes, safety requirements, and quality standards. The inspector collaborates closely with contractors, engineers, and facility operations staff to support successful project delivery and resolve issues as they arise.
Responsibilities
Inspect construction activities related to water and wastewater treatment facilities, including civil, structural, mechanical, and utility work.
Review contract plans and specifications for constructability, identifying errors, omissions, conflicts, and potential problem areas before and during construction.
Schedule, plan, coordinate, and perform daily site inspections at active construction locations.
Coordinate construction-related system outages with the owner and facility operations staff to minimize disruption to plant operations.
Prepare complete, clear, and accurate daily inspection reports and maintain a detailed daily diary of site activities.
Maintain comprehensive project records, including inspection reports, correspondence, photo documentation, and other field documentation.
Track construction progress and changed conditions, and maintain current as-built drawings throughout the project.
Measure, document, and verify quantities of work completed in the field and prepare monthly quantity and pay estimates.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, engineers, and owner representatives to support collaboration and problem-solving.
Provide oversight to junior-level Construction Inspectors as assigned, ensuring consistent inspection practices and quality standards.
Mentor and assist with the training and development of junior inspection staff.
Apply in-depth knowledge of construction specifications, methods, materials, and equipment used in water and wastewater infrastructure projects during inspections.
Monitor earthwork and utility construction activities, including soil compaction, density testing procedures, trenching, and backfill, to verify compliance with project requirements.
Oversee concrete construction activities, including placement, curing, sampling, and basic reinforcement practices, to ensure quality and adherence to specifications.
Promote and monitor safe work practices in accordance with OSHA Construction Safety Orders.
Work independently with minimal supervision in an active construction environment while managing daily inspection priorities.
Use computers and standard office software to prepare reports, maintain records, and support project documentation.
Essential Skills
2-5 years of responsible construction inspection experience, preferably on water, wastewater, or heavy civil projects.
In-depth knowledge of construction specifications, methods, materials, and equipment used in water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
Working knowledge of earthwork and utility construction, including soil compaction, density testing procedures, trenching, and backfill.
Understanding of concrete construction, including placement, curing, sampling, and basic reinforcement practices.
Strong knowledge of OSHA Construction Safety Orders and safe work practices in construction environments.
Ability to maintain clear, neat, and accurate field documentation and project records.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in an active construction environment.
Strong oral and written communication skills for effective interaction with contractors, engineers, and owner representatives.
Proficiency with computers and standard office software for reporting and recordkeeping.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with water and wastewater treatment plant construction projects.
Background in civil, structural, mechanical, or utility construction inspection.
Experience preparing quantity and pay estimates for construction projects.
Ability to mentor and provide guidance to junior inspection staff.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build collaborative working relationships.

Work Environment
This role is based onsite at an active water treatment plant, where the environment can be loud at times with noticeable odors and ongoing construction activity. The Construction Inspector works closely with a small team of approximately 4-5 people while also interacting regularly with contractors, engineers, and facility operations staff. The culture values independence, initiative, and a willingness to step in and help where needed. The position follows a typical schedule of 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Casual attire is appropriate onsite, with an expectation of suitable clothing and gear for an active construction environment.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $33.65 - $40.87/hr.
