The incumbent serves as a Device Clinic technician in the Orlando VA Healthcare System. The person in this role will be part of the Orlando VA Healthcare System Cardiology Device Clinic team which is a cross-functional team managing implanted cardiac devices. Responsibilities The MIT (EKG) technician performs a variety of diagnostic procedures which include but are not limited to: Remotely monitor rhythm tracings for patient with implanted cardiac devices via computer. Completes basic analysis of tracings and provides preliminary reports to Electrophysiology (EP) Providers for final reporting. Manages sequence of regular rhythm downloads for assigned patients as well as required in-person follow-up visits. Completes scheduling, charting and charge capture processes in Computerized Patient Record System (ORS). Performs implanted device interrogation as required. Performs in-clinic reprogramming of implanted devices under the guidance and orders of an EP Provider. Makes regular telephone contact with Device Clinic patients for remote care, monitoring and device management. Provides device follow-up to patients in device clinic. Troubleshoots and changes to device programming as needed. Serves as an effective representative to physicians, hospital and clinic staff regarding devices that have been implanted. Stays current in the knowledge of each manufacturer's devices. Provides remote follow-up enrollment, education and training to patients and staff to promote transmission and drive clinic efficiency. Troubleshoots when patients are unable to send transmissions or if transmissions are missed. Conducts lookup and documents all a patient's remote transmissions in the patient's record. Updates physicians, mid-level providers, and nursing staff of problems requiring immediate attention and follow-up. Offers potential solutions to device programming. Completes necessary documentation and phone calls. Receives technical inquiries by telephone Researches solutions to questions or problems that arise from the physicians, mid-level providers or patients. Educates and trains personnel and office staff on technical matters relating to device function and follow-up. Responsible for enrolling patient to the National database and updates information, as needed. Places orders in CPRS for upcoming transmissions and ensures communication between National data center in Washington, D.C. Performs routine clerical procedures for maintaining accurate records so that easy recall of patient examinations may be achieved. Maintains adequate supplies so that examinations are not delayed due to the lack of necessary equipment and supplies. Must be aware of and practice the safety policies/procedures of the Orlando VA Healthcare System and participate in quality assurance activities as directed. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications BASIC REQUIREMENTS Medical Instrument Technician - Electrocardiograph Technician (EKG) Citizenship. Must be a citizen of the United States. English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a. Education. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. In addition, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Grandfathering Provision. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). GRADE DETERMINATION Electrocardiograph Technician (EKG) - GS-8 Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which provided knowledge of advanced specialized procedures, the pharmacology related to this occupation, and knowledge of related acute disorders and diseases and their effects on organs and methods of treatment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (): Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. KSAs, are appropriate for all positions at this level. KSAs with () are to be used in accordance with their appropriateness for the specific assignment. Knowledge of pharmacology related to specialized procedures. Ability to provide briefings and orientations to hospital staff including physicians.
