Summary The Hematology/Oncology Advanced Practice Nurse - Nurse Practitioner is a specialized mid-level practitioner responsible for providing comprehensive diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventative healthcare services to Veterans with malignant and non-malignant hematologic and oncology conditions. The NP will deliver a full range of Hematology/Oncology services emphasizing quality, timeliness, and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs mission. Responsibilities Duties may include but are not limited to: Administrative Duties i. Will abide by all Veterans Affairs (VA) rules and regulations pertinent to the scope of practice within any VA facility. ii. Be actively engaged in evaluating and addressing patient and clinical needs. In addition, be expected to evaluate clinical performance, and formulate and implement plans to improve the care delivered to our patient population. iii. Research best practices and ideas, creating and implementing change while using evidence in practice for optimal patient care. iv. Perform administrative duties as directed by the supervising physician or agent of the supervising physician. v. Complete all required encounter information in computerized patient record system (CPRS) in a timely manner. vi. Mentor and coach other APRN while fostering relationships with the goal of building capacity within others. vii. Providing leadership on internal and external committees, taking an active leadership role as chair, or co-chair on committees within South Texas Veteran Health Care System. Clinical Duties: i. Independently practice as an NP providing a full range of care utilizing treatment guidelines in the delivery of high-quality care. ii. Order appropriate medications including chemotherapy based upon the plan provided by the treating physician. iii. Independently bone marrow biopsy and lumbar puncture perform with intrathecal chemotherapy. iv. Demonstrated current competence in the provision of comprehensive care for patients who have illnesses within the scope of General Internal Medicine or Family Practice. Demonstrated current competency includes provision of acute and chronic care, to include prevention through age and gender specific immunizations and screenings, compliance with evidenced based medicine and clinical practice guidelines and overall coordination of patient care. v. Determines critical thinking in assessing and managing complex clinical situations. vi. Manage treatment-related side effects such as neutropenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, nausea, and infusion reactions. vii. Implements quality improvement initiatives that lead to outcomes at the panel/program level. viii. Counsel's patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment goals (curative vs. palliative), and potential toxicities. ix. Actively participates in Tumor Boards and multidisciplinary clinics. Research Duties (if applicable): i. Participates in clinical trials and quality improvement initiatives to enhance Veteran outcomes and safety protocols. Qualifications Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) Basic Requirements Education: A post-master's certificate or master's or doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner. (Applicants pending the completion of educational requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until the education requirements are met.) Must be a graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). NOTE: Foreign Education. Graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing programs, the nurse practitioner degree equivalency must be validated through an Agency recognized degree equivalency evaluation agency, such as the International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). Candidates with equivalent nurse practitioner masters or doctorate level degrees who possess current, full, active, and unrestricted registration and certification will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant appointment. License - All APN (NPs) must possess and maintain an active, current, full, and unrestricted APN license to practice as an NP in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Basic Board Certification - All APN (NPs) must maintain full and current basic board certification in one of the following: Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP), Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP), Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP), Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP), or Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (GNP) from one of the following: the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB), or other nationally recognized certifying body in the area in which the Nurse Practitioner is academically prepared. NOTE: Grandfathering Provision - All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and an APN (NP) assignment that are also performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification.
