Summary About the Position: This position is located at Lower Granite Project, operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers and situated on the Snake River, 32-river miles downstream from Clarkston, Washington. This Project provides hydroelectric generation, navigation, fish passage and recreation. Responsibilities Diagnoses malfunctions and performs major and minor repairs and maintenance on juvenile fish transportation barges, heavy mobile engineering equipment, generator assemblies, compressors and other stationary and mobile equipment. Provides work direction to lower graded employees who are assisting. Perform metal fabrication, body or structural work requiring welding, soldering, and straightening of components. Performs preventive maintenance service and maintains equipment service records. Inspects barges and associated equipment frequently to identify possible equipment failure during transportation season. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform the common tasks of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic. Ability to remove, adjust, replace, clean, and install a variety of parts, components, and accessories to include filters, radiators, bearings, springs, shock absorbers, wheel cylinders, starter motors, pumps, mufflers, and other items of similar complexity. Ability to perform engine tune-ups and adjust brakes. Ability to assist in the removal, disassembly, repair, and reassembly of engines and transmissions. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Trouble Shooting Use of Measuring Instruments PHYSICAL EFFORT Works for long periods in tiring or uncomfortable positions. Work often requires standing, stooping, crouching, bending, and stretching. There is frequent lifting of items weighing up to ten pounds and occasionally items weighing 50 pounds and often exert similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment. However, hoists, hand trucks, lifts, and other workers are available to assist with heavier items. The work is performed on top of, under, and in tight compartments of equipment in cramped or awkward positions. WORKING CONDITIONS Employee is exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise. Dirt, dust, and grease are always present. Exposure to wet and cold weather conditions. Exposure to exhaust fumes, cuts, bruises, burns, strains, and electrical shocks.
