Summary The VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (GLAHCS), West Los Angeles facility, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) - Cardiology for our Specialty Care Department. The NP is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing, and evaluating direct and indirect health and quality of care for patients under their care. The NP may function in clinical, administrative, research, and educational settings. Responsibilities Major Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Provides direct and indirect patient care and works as a member of a healthcare team to oversee and coordinate medical care for a population of Veterans in the given practice setting. Independently practices as a nurse practitioner, utilizing evidence-based practice guidelines in the delivery of high-quality care. Takes comprehensive histories, provide physical examinations and other health assessment and screening activities, diagnose, treat, and manage patients with acute and chronic illnesses and diseases. Orders laboratory and imaging studies and integrate the results into clinical decision making. Prescribes medication and durable medical equipment. Demonstrates critical thinking in assessing and managing complex clinical situations. Collaborates with patients, families, and the heath care team to develop and implement treatment plans and evaluate health outcomes. Makes appropriate referrals for patients and families, and request consultations. Aids in health promotion, disease prevention, health education, and counseling as well as the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic diseases. Leads the delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, improving outcomes of panel/program. Provides leadership in identifying and addressing ethical issues that impact patients and staff. Manages program resources (financial, human, material, or informational) to facilitate safe, effective, and efficient care. Implements educational plan to meet changing program or service needs for self and others. Attends staff meetings, team meetings, committee meetings, and completes peer review evaluations. Uses professional standards of care and practice to evaluate programs and/or service activities. Consistently demonstrates positive effective customer service, communication skills and professional behaviors that promote cooperation and teamwork with internal and external customers. Provides active leadership in program-based performance improvement activities. Participates in support of educational training of graduate students and other Allied trainees in related-fields. Collaborates with others in research activities to improve care. Cardiology Specific: includes multiple campuses at GLA Attends sub-specialty clinics including: general cardiology, heart failure, heart transplant, arrhythmia, pulmonary hypertension, amyloid, structural heart, and preventive cardiology. Screens consults for appropriate clinics. Performs procedures including exercise stress testing, ICD and pacemaker interrogations and evaluations. Patients may be seen as inpatients or outpatients. Triages patients and their concerns/clinical issues. Assists in the design/implementation of delivery systems/programs to facilitate the care of cardiology patients and evaluate effectiveness of studies related to the delivery of care and services to cardiac patients. Participates in cardiology programs as they relate to organizational goals, in performance improvement activities and in-servicing of advanced practice nurses. Manages health disease-specific dashboards for quality improvement and performance. Tracks laboratory data to assess tolerability of medications with high risk of adverse reactions. Consults with physician staff and utilizes consultation services when appropriate Conducts and evaluates health teaching programs to patients, their families and staff, both individually and in group settings while acting as a consultant to nursing personnel and other disciplines. Involved in developing and implementing policies, standards, and programs to support and advance the clinical setting. Responsible for implementing and maintaining a patient and staff education and training program in conjunction with nurse educators and managers for management of specialty infusions such as IV iron, IV or SQ furosemide. Qualifications Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) Basic Requirements Education: A post-master's certificate or master's or doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner. (Applicants pending the completion of educational requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until the education requirements are met.) Must be a graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). NOTE: Foreign Education. Graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing programs, the nurse practitioner degree equivalency must be validated through an Agency recognized degree equivalency evaluation agency, such as the International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). Candidates with equivalent nurse practitioner masters or doctorate level degrees who possess current, full, active, and unrestricted registration and certification will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant appointment. License - All APN (NPs) must possess and maintain an active, current, full, and unrestricted APN license to practice as an NP in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Basic Board Certification - All APN (NPs) must maintain full and current basic board certification in one of the following: Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP), Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP), Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP), Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP), or Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (GNP) from one of the following: the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB), or other nationally recognized certifying body in the area in which the Nurse Practitioner is academically prepared. Preferred Experience: Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) (1) year prior direct patient care experience in Cardiology. NOTE: Grandfathering Provision - All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and an APN (NP) assignment that are also performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification. The following Scope, Education and Experience, and Dimension criteria must be met to qualify for Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) II: Exception to Licensure for Graduate Nurse Technicians. Candidates who otherwise meet the basic requirements, but do not possess the required licensure and/or certification, may be appointed at the entry step of the Nurse II, as a Graduate Nurse Technician - Nurse Practitioner on a temporary appointment up to any period not-to-exceed one year and a day under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 405(c)(2)(B). Education and Experience Requirement: Meets basic education requirement for an APN (NP) AND one year of specialized APN (NP) experience equivalent to the Nurse II grade level.
