Job Title: I&E Reliability EngineerJob Description
This role is for a hands-on I&E Reliability Engineer who will lead electrical, instrumentation, and automation reliability efforts in a chemical manufacturing environment. The engineer improves equipment uptime, strengthens preventive and predictive maintenance programs, and ensures compliance with electrical, safety, and process safety management requirements. This is a high-impact position that combines deep technical expertise, field-level troubleshooting, leadership of a small technical team, and continuous improvement in a fast-paced, highly regulated manufacturing operation.
Responsibilities
Drive improvements in equipment reliability by minimizing downtime and breakdowns while maximizing plant productivity.
Develop, implement, and sustain preventive and predictive maintenance programs for electrical and instrumentation assets, including KPI tracking and analysis.
Support, diagnose, and troubleshoot plant control and automation systems, including PLC and HMI platforms.
Lead and participate in Root Cause Analysis and failure investigations, and compare results against established reliability standards.
Provide technical oversight and support for electrical, instrumentation, and control system installations and construction projects.
Serve as the technical escalation point for complex electrical, instrumentation, and automation issues in the plant.
Ensure compliance with safety standards and electrical codes, including NFPA 70E, NEC, local regulations, and internal procedures.
Support intrinsic safety and explosion-proof system specifications and applications in hazardous areas.
Troubleshoot motors, including direct drive and VFD-driven motors, and ensure proper specification and replacement selection.
Support the troubleshooting, installation, and repair of valves and actuators, including remotely operated valve systems.
Partner with Reliability Engineers to ensure proper calibration of all plant instrumentation.
Maintain accurate and current P&IDs, including symbols, tags, and instrument lines, as well as wiring diagrams and instrument loop drawings.
Lead, mentor, and train I&E technicians to ensure high-quality, safe execution of work.
Collaborate closely with operations, maintenance, and reliability teams to support continuous improvement initiatives.
Participate in an on-call rotation and provide off-hours support as needed to resolve critical plant issues.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
Minimum 3 years of industrial experience, preferably in manufacturing environments.
4+ years of electrical engineering experience in an industrial environment, with strong hands-on exposure to plant systems.
Hands-on experience performing Root Cause Failure Analysis and leading structured investigations.
Proven experience developing, implementing, and sustaining I&E preventive and predictive maintenance programs, including KPI tracking and analysis.
Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and direct technical team members, including I&E technicians.
Strong skills in PLC troubleshooting and support of control and automation systems.
Experience with electrical standards and safety practices, including NFPA 70E and NEC.
Ability to troubleshoot motor problems, including direct drive and VFD-driven motors, and select appropriate replacements.
Experience maintaining and updating P&IDs, wiring diagrams, and instrument loop drawings.
Solid understanding of reliability engineering principles, failure analysis, and reliability testing.
Strong troubleshooting skills across electrical, instrumentation, and control systems in an industrial setting.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience in chemical manufacturing or other process safety management (PSM) regulated process industries.
Hands-on experience with SAP or similar computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
Experience with distributed control systems (DCS) is a plus.
Background in reliability engineering, including reliability testing and structured failure analysis.
Familiarity with intrinsic safety and explosion-proof system specifications and applications.
Ability to work effectively as the primary electrical engineer supporting a team of I&E technicians.
Strong communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and to train and mentor technical staff.
Work Environment
The position is based in a chemical manufacturing facility that operates in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment. The engineer works primarily on a Monday-Friday first-shift schedule, with flexibility to support off-hours work and participate in an on-call rotation as needed. The role involves frequent interaction with plant floor equipment, including electrical systems, instrumentation, PLCs, HMIs, motors, valves, actuators, and distributed control systems. The engineer works closely with a team of approximately four I&E technicians and serves as the primary electrical engineering resource for the site. The environment requires strict adherence to safety standards, electrical codes, and process safety management practices, and may involve working in areas with hazardous materials where intrinsic safety and explosion-proof equipment are critical.
