Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Iowa State University is seeking a detail oriented Medical Laboratory Technician to join the Clinical Pathology Laboratory in the College of Veterinary Medicine. This role supports diagnostic testing across a wide range of animal species and plays an important part in both patient care and the teaching mission of the college.
This position is a great opportunity for someone interested in entering the field of animal diagnostics. Prior animal experience is not required, and training will be provided to help you build the skills needed for veterinary laboratory work.
Position SummaryThe Medical Laboratory Technician performs diagnostic testing on clinical and research samples, supports daily laboratory operations, and helps ensure the quality and accuracy of results. In addition to technical responsibilities, this role contributes to training veterinary students, residents, and new staff in a collaborative, teaching focused environment.
Position Details- Full time position- Location: College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa-Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 5:00PM , with rotating 4 hour shift on Saturday (9am - 12pm).
Key Responsibilities- Perform diagnostic testing on multi species samples, including hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, serology, cytology, and coagulation- Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments and analyzers to ensure accurate and timely results- Carry out blood banking procedures, including crossmatching and related testing- Enter, review, and manage test data in the Laboratory Information System (LIS)- Conduct quality control checks and troubleshoot equipment as needed to maintain high laboratory standards- Train students, residents, and new staff on laboratory procedures, equipment use, and best practices- Assist with inventory management, including monitoring supplies and coordinating restocking- Prepare and organize samples for referral testing and maintain accurate laboratory records- Support general laboratory operations and contribute to a clean, safe, and efficient work environment
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a Diagnostic or clinical laboratory.
Experience in laboratory techniques, including sample preparation, staining, and microscopy.
Additional years working as a Medical Laboratory Technologist.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.
