Job Description
The CMT Technician performs construction materials testing and inspection for soils, concrete, asphalt, and related materials in both field and laboratory settings. This role supports project teams by collecting samples, conducting tests, transporting equipment and specimens, and ensuring that all work meets established quality and safety standards. The position is entry level and offers comprehensive training, opportunities for professional growth, and a strong benefits package.
Responsibilities
Collect and prepare samples of soils, concrete, asphalt, and other construction materials for testing.
Perform routine field and laboratory tests on construction materials in accordance with established procedures and standards.
Support field and lab staff by assisting with daily testing activities and project-related tasks.
Transport equipment, specimens, and documents to and from field locations, laboratories, clients, and other offices as needed.
Assist with setting up, operating, and maintaining testing equipment, including nuclear gauges and other field instruments.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in both field and laboratory environments.
Assist other technicians and staff with routine tasks to ensure projects are completed efficiently and on schedule.
Learn and retain technical and procedural information provided during training to become increasingly self-sufficient.
Follow all quality policies and procedures to produce accurate, reliable, and high-quality test results and documentation.
Adhere to all safety policies and procedures, including participating in near-miss reporting and safety audit programs.
Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and clients, both verbally and in writing, to report findings and progress.
Work flexible schedules, including early mornings, long shifts, and occasional overnight work for activities such as concrete pours.
Lift, carry, and handle materials, equipment, and samples weighing between 10 and 50 pounds as part of daily duties.
Drive to project sites and other locations using a valid driver's license while following all applicable driving and safety regulations.
Essential Skills
Entry-level experience level with a strong interest in construction materials testing or construction-related work.
1-2 years of experience in construction or construction materials testing (CMT) preferred.
Ability to perform soil testing and other basic construction materials tests after training.
Ability to work outside for extended periods of time in varying weather and site conditions.
Ability to lift and carry 10-50 lbs. regularly as part of field and lab duties.
Capacity to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with coworkers, supervisors, and clients.
Valid driver's license and ability to safely travel to and from job sites.
High school diploma or equivalent education.
Willingness to work weekends as needed to meet project schedules.
Willingness to work varying schedules, including early mornings, long shifts, and occasional overnight work.
Commitment to following safety policies, procedures, and participation in safety programs.
Ability to follow detailed instructions, learn technical information, and apply it consistently in the field and lab.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Prior exposure to construction, concrete, soils, asphalt, or related field work is beneficial.
Experience with construction materials testing (CMT) is a plus.
Familiarity with nuclear gauge operation or willingness to learn proper use and safety procedures.
Strong attention to detail and focus on producing accurate test results and documentation.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced project environment.
Strong organizational skills to manage samples, paperwork, and equipment across multiple projects.

Work Environment
This role primarily takes place outdoors on active construction sites, with occasional work in a laboratory setting. Work conditions include exposure to varying weather, uneven terrain, and typical construction site activities. Training generally follows a schedule of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the first week, after which typical project schedules may range from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with the possibility of 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. shifts. There may be times when overnight concrete pours are required; schedules are managed to provide at least 8 or more hours between a previous pour and a night pour. The position requires flexibility to work varying hours and occasional weekends based on project needs. Work involves using field and lab testing equipment, including nuclear gauges and other specialized instruments. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cedar Creek, TX.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $24.00/hr.
