The Mechanical Engineer provides hands-on production support to machining and assembly areas while contributing to the design and development of specialized fire and emergency vehicles and related plumbing and body systems. This role analyzes engineering data, creates and refines mechanical designs, and collaborates closely with a growing engineering team to deliver innovative, reliable, and manufacturable products.
Responsibilities
Provide day-to-day production support to machining and assembly areas, troubleshooting mechanical issues and recommending practical design or process improvements.
Analyze engineering sketches, specifications, drawings, and related data to determine key design factors such as size, shape, and arrangement of parts.
Develop and refine mechanical designs for fire and emergency vehicle components, including plumbing and body systems, ensuring functionality, safety, and manufacturability.
Sketch rough layouts and preliminary concepts to communicate design intent and support design reviews with internal and external stakeholders.
Compute and verify critical design parameters including angles, weights, surface areas, dimensions, radii, clearances, tolerances, leverage points, and hole locations.
Plan and formulate engineering work for assigned projects, organizing tasks and coordinating with project team members as needed.
Create, update, and maintain CAD models and engineering drawings to support new product development and continuous improvement initiatives.
Collaborate with internal and external customers to understand requirements, incorporate feedback, and ensure designs meet performance and quality expectations.
Support new product development efforts by contributing mechanical engineering expertise from concept through production release.
Participate in design reviews, provide technical input, and help ensure that all designs comply with applicable standards and internal guidelines.
Essential Skills
Mechanical engineering or mechanical design experience in a production or manufacturing environment.
Proficiency in mechanical design principles, including strength of materials, tolerancing, and manufacturability considerations.
Ability to analyze engineering sketches, specifications, and drawings to derive detailed design requirements.
Experience creating and interpreting mechanical layouts, including computation of angles, dimensions, clearances, and tolerances.
CAD proficiency for mechanical design and drafting (such as AutoCAD or similar design tools).
Experience supporting machining and assembly operations from an engineering perspective.
Strong drafting skills, including preparation of clear, accurate, and complete engineering drawings.
Ability to work effectively on multiple projects, organizing tasks and contributing to project planning and execution.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to translate production feedback into practical design improvements.
Effective communication skills for collaborating with internal teams and external customers.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Background as a mechanical designer or mechanical engineer, with experience in mechanical design packages.
Experience with new product development in a manufacturing or vehicle-related environment.
Exposure to fire and emergency vehicles, plumbing systems, or vehicle body design is beneficial.
Comfort working in a collaborative engineering group and contributing to a growing team.
Ability to adapt to a unique product line and learn specialized applications in fire and emergency equipment.
Work Environment
This role is based in an office setting focused on mechanical design work for a unique product line of fire and emergency vehicles. You will work closely with a dedicated engineering group of approximately 17 team members, with additional growth planned. The environment combines a small-company feel with the resources and collaboration of a larger engineering team. Daily work involves using CAD and other engineering tools, partnering with internal and external customers, and supporting production areas such as machining and assembly. The culture emphasizes teamwork, innovation, and practical problem-solving to support a specialized and impactful product line.

This is a Contract position based out of Marion, WI.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr.
